Lorem Ipsum, Explained

By Udit Agarwal · Updated October 17, 2026

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text: scrambled Latin, cut from a work by the Roman statesman Cicero, that designers and developers put into a layout to show where real text will go. As written it means almost nothing, which is the point: it looks like text without inviting anyone to read it. The classic passage begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" and runs to 69 words.

Where does lorem ipsum come from?

The words come from De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a dialogue on ethics that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The placeholder borrows from Book 1, sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33, where the speaker, Torquatus, sets out the Epicurean case that pleasure is the highest good and pain the greatest evil. The sentence behind the famous opening reads:

Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit...

In plain English: nor is there anyone who loves, pursues or wants to obtain pain itself, simply because it is pain.

The connection was made by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. Curious about "consectetur", a rare word in classical Latin, he tracked down where Cicero used it, and he described the find in a 1994 letter to Before & After magazine.

What do the words mean?

Very little as they stand. The placeholder cuts, drops and reorders Cicero's words until they no longer form Latin sentences, and even its first word is a fragment: "lorem" is the tail end of "dolorem", meaning pain. Some pieces still carry their original sense:

Placeholder Cicero's Latin Rough meaning
lorem ipsum dolorem ipsum pain itself
dolor sit amet quia dolor sit, amet loves it because it is pain
consectetur adipiscing elit consectetur, adipisci velit pursues, wants to obtain
ut labore et dolore magna aliqua ut labore et dolore magnam aliquam (seeks) some great (pleasure) through toil and pain
id est laborum id est laborum et dolorum fuga that is, flight from toil and pain

Other words are mangled: "eiusmod" glues "eius modi" together, "ullamco" is what is left of "ullam corporis", and "adipiscing" is not a Latin word at all.

How it spread

Type founders set Latin in their specimens long before lorem ipsum. William Caslon's famous specimen sheet of 1734 shows his typefaces with the opening of Cicero's first speech against Catiline, "Quousque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra?" That is a different passage, set as written. The scrambled text designers use today is first documented in the 1960s, when Letraset printed it on dry-transfer sheets that let designers rub blocks of dummy text onto paste-up artwork.

Desktop publishing carried it onto screens in the mid-1980s, by most accounts starting with templates in Aldus PageMaker, and word processors, design programs and website templates have offered it ever since. In Microsoft Word, typing =lorem() on an empty line and pressing Enter inserts paragraphs of it. It is now so common online that AI tokenizers have learned it: in OpenAI's o200k_base encoding, "consectetur" and "adipiscing" are a single token each, as the guide to AI tokens explains.

The "1500s printer" story

Many websites say lorem ipsum has been the industry's dummy text since an unknown printer scrambled it for a type specimen book in the 1500s. It is an often-repeated but unconfirmed story. No one has produced a 16th-century example, and the claim seems to start with McClintock's 1994 letter, where it was offered without evidence. The earliest uses anyone has documented come from the 1960s. The safest summary: the words are more than 2,000 years old, and the habit of using them as filler, as far as anyone can show, dates from the 20th century.

Why designers use placeholder text

Layouts are often designed before the words exist. Placeholder text, a practice designers call greeking, lets them judge type size, line length, spacing and the rhythm of a page while the copy is still being written. Lorem ipsum suits the job because it has the texture of prose: words of varied length and sentence-like breaks, so lines wrap and paragraphs settle the way real text does, which a repeated "text text text" never will. Because nobody can read it, reviewers look at the design instead of editing the sentences. And it is instant: a generator fills any box with as much as you need.

The downsides of lorem ipsum

Placeholder text hides the problems real content brings. Headlines run longer than the slot, product names refuse to wrap, the German version of a button label often runs longer than the English, and a customer's name turns out to be 40 characters long. A design that looks balanced with three tidy paragraphs of filler can fall apart with one line of real copy, or with eight. Lorem ipsum also flatters a layout: it has no numbers, links, long names or headlines that run on, and every paragraph looks much like the last.

It also postpones the question of what the page should say. Designing with real or draft copy, an approach often called content-first design, exposes those problems while they are cheap to fix. Once the real text arrives, the Word & Character Counter tells you how long it actually is, so you can compare it with what the layout allows.

And then there is filler that never gets replaced. Lorem ipsum regularly turns up on live websites, in apps and occasionally in print.

Accessibility and SEO risks of shipping it

Screen readers read leftover filler aloud, usually with the pronunciation rules of the page's language, so people who rely on them hear a stream of meaningless syllables. WCAG 2.2 expects passages in another language to be marked up so assistive technology can switch pronunciation (success criterion 3.1.2, Language of Parts), but no markup makes placeholder text meaningful. Where lorem ipsum stands in for image alt text or link text, it also breaks the requirements for text alternatives (1.1.1) and link purpose (2.4.4), because the element is left without a meaningful name.

Search engines index whatever text a public page contains. A template or staging site left open to crawlers can show up in results with Latin as its snippet, and a page of placeholder text gives searchers nothing, so it has little chance of ranking for anything useful. Keep staging sites behind a password or a noindex rule, and before launch search templates, CMS entries and translation files for "lorem" and "ipsum". A build check that fails when those words appear catches anything that slips through.

Alternatives to lorem ipsum

  • Real or draft copy. Even rough working text beats filler. Ask early for real headlines and the longest likely product name.
  • Realistic sample data. The Mock Data Generator fills tables and cards with names, emails, dates and prices as JSON, and the Random Name Generator produces names for test accounts.
  • Deliberate edge cases. Test a 40-character name, an empty state, a long German compound and a right-to-left script, the cases lorem ipsum never shows.
  • Pangrams for type. "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" uses every letter of the English alphabet in one line, which is what a font sample needs.
  • Placeholder images. The Placeholder Image Generator makes stand-in images at the exact size a layout expects.

Generate lorem ipsum with ArrayKit

The Lorem Ipsum Generator makes paragraphs, sentences or words, from 1 to 200 at a time. Each sentence is 5 to 15 words drawn at random from the 63 distinct words of the classic passage, starting with a capital and ending with a full stop. Each paragraph holds 3 to 6 sentences, about 45 words on average, and paragraphs are separated by a blank line. With "Start with Lorem ipsum" switched on, the first paragraph opens "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,", a batch of sentences opens "Lorem ipsum", and a batch of words begins with those two words (or just "Lorem" if you ask for one word). Switch it off and the text starts with a random word.

Because the words are drawn at random, the output is not the classic passage word for word, and apart from the comma in the opening line its only punctuation is the full stop. The default is three paragraphs, around 140 words. Regenerate draws fresh text, Copy puts it on your clipboard and Download saves it as lorem.txt. The output is plain text only, with no HTML or Markdown option, and it is generated in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What does lorem ipsum mean? As written, almost nothing. It is a scrambled extract from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, and its first words come from "dolorem ipsum", which means "pain itself". The passage it was cut from argues that nobody loves pain for its own sake.

Is lorem ipsum real Latin? Partly. Many of its words are real Latin, but others are clipped, merged or invented, such as "lorem", "eiusmod" and "adipiscing", and together they no longer form grammatical sentences. A Latin reader recognizes fragments of Cicero but cannot read it as a text.

Who invented lorem ipsum? Nobody knows. The words are Cicero's, from 45 BC, but the scrambled placeholder is first documented on Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s. The popular story about a printer in the 1500s has never been confirmed.

How long is the standard lorem ipsum passage? The classic paragraph, from "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" to "id est laborum", has 69 words and 445 characters including spaces, in four sentences.

How do I insert lorem ipsum in Microsoft Word? Type =lorem() on an empty line and press Enter, and Word fills in paragraphs of placeholder text. =rand() works the same way but inserts English sample text instead.

Is lorem ipsum bad for SEO? Only if it goes live. A public page of placeholder text gives searchers nothing and may be indexed with Latin as its snippet. Keep staging sites out of search engines and search your content for "lorem" before launch.

What should I use instead of lorem ipsum? Real or draft copy wherever you can get it, realistic sample data for tables and forms, and deliberately awkward strings for long names and translations. Lorem ipsum still has a place in early wireframes, as long as it is replaced before the page goes public.
