Fuel Cost Calculator Online
Estimate the fuel cost of a trip from distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price, right in your browser.
The Fuel Cost Calculator runs entirely in your browser. The distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price you enter never leave your device and nothing is uploaded to ArrayKit.

About Fuel Cost Calculator
Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much a trip will cost in gas or petrol from three numbers: distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price. Switch between US units (miles and mpg) and metric units (kilometers and liters per 100 km), enter your fuel price per gallon or per liter, and the calculator works out fuel used, total cost, and cost per mile or kilometer. It is useful for budgeting a road trip, comparing two vehicles' running costs, splitting gas money with passengers, or estimating a commute's monthly fuel spend. Built for drivers, road-trip planners, and anyone tracking travel expenses. Everything computes locally in your browser — your trip details and fuel prices are never uploaded.
Features
- Solve fuel cost for either US units (miles, mpg) or metric units (km, L/100km)
- Enter distance, fuel efficiency, and fuel price to get an instant estimate
- Shows fuel used, total trip cost, and cost per mile or kilometer
- One-click Segmented toggle switches unit systems without retyping fields
- Copy a plain-text summary of distance, efficiency, price, and results
- Clear error message when distance, efficiency, or price is missing or invalid
- Works for any vehicle — car, motorcycle, van, or truck — given its efficiency figure
- Runs entirely in your browser with no trip data sent anywhere
How to use the Fuel Cost Calculator
- Choose US (mpg) or Metric (L/100km) units
- Enter the trip distance
- Enter your vehicle's fuel efficiency and the current fuel price
- Read the fuel used, total cost, and cost per mile or km, or copy the summary
Example
Input
300 mi, 30 mpg, $3.50/gal
Output
Fuel cost: $35.00
Common errors & troubleshooting
- Total cost looks ten times too high or too low. — Check the unit toggle — mpg and L/100km use different formulas, so entering a metric efficiency figure while set to US mode gives a wrong fuel-used number.
- Fuel efficiency entered as L/100km but toggle is set to mpg (or vice versa). — Switch the Segmented control to match the number you have — mpg for miles-per-gallon figures, L/100km for liters-per-100-km figures — before reading the result.
- Result shows $0.00 for total cost. — Confirm the fuel price field is filled in — a blank or zero price makes total cost zero even when fuel used is calculated correctly.
- Cost per mile seems off after changing fuel price mid-trip. — The calculator uses one fuel price for the whole distance; for a trip with different prices at different stops, average the prices you actually paid before entering one figure.
Frequently asked questions
- What does the Fuel Cost Calculator compute?
- It estimates fuel used, total fuel cost, and cost per mile or kilometer for a trip, based on the distance you enter, your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price.
- Does the Fuel Cost Calculator support metric units?
- Yes. Switch the toggle to Metric to enter distance in kilometers and efficiency in liters per 100 km (L/100km); switch to US to use miles and miles per gallon (mpg).
- How does the Fuel Cost Calculator convert L/100km to liters used?
- It multiplies distance by the L/100km figure and divides by 100 — for example, 100 km at 8 L/100km uses 8 liters, then multiplies by the price per liter for total cost.
- Is the fuel cost estimate exact?
- No — it is an estimate based on the efficiency and price you enter. Real-world fuel use varies with driving style, traffic, load, and terrain, so verify before budgeting a trip on the number alone.
- Does the Fuel Cost Calculator upload my trip or price data?
- No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. The distance, efficiency, and fuel price you type never leave your device and are not uploaded to ArrayKit.
- Can I use the Fuel Cost Calculator for a round trip?
- Yes — enter the full round-trip distance (there and back) and the calculator scales fuel used and total cost linearly with the distance you provide.
