HEIC to JPG Converter

Turn iPhone HEIC photos into JPG, PNG or WebP in your browser, a whole batch at a time. Photos are opened and converted on your device, and nothing is uploaded.

Photos are decoded and saved again inside this tab. They are never uploaded, and the converted copies carry no EXIF data or GPS location.

About HEIC to JPG Converter

iPhones and many Android phones save photos as HEIC, a format that fits the same picture into roughly half the space of a JPG but that plenty of Windows PCs, websites and apps cannot open without extra software. This converter reads HEIC and HEIF files in your browser and saves each one as a JPG, PNG or WebP. Drop in a whole camera roll and the photos are converted one after another, so only one is decoded in memory at a time, even in a batch of forty. A quality slider, an optional longest-side limit of 4096, 2048 or 1080 pixels and a background colour for the rare transparent photo are all you set. A photo's rotation is applied, so portraits come out upright, and the new file leaves out the EXIF block, removing camera details and GPS location. Every photo is decoded on your device.

Features

  • Reads HEIC and HEIF files, including the photos an iPhone, an iPad or an Android phone saves by default
  • Saves as JPG, PNG or WebP, with a quality slider for JPG and WebP, and WebP offered only where your browser can write it
  • Converts a batch one photo at a time, so only one decoded photo is in memory at once, even with forty queued
  • Optional size limit of 4096, 2048 or 1080 pixels on the long side; a smaller photo is never enlarged
  • Shows a preview of every result with its pixel size, its file size and how much that changed
  • Downloads one photo, or all of them in a ZIP whose names never collide, such as IMG_0001 (2).jpg
  • Applies the photo's rotation so portraits come out upright, and drops EXIF data including GPS location
  • Fills any transparent area with a background colour you pick when saving as JPG, and refuses photos over 100 megapixels with a clear message

How to use the HEIC to JPG Converter

  1. Drop your HEIC photos onto the page, choose them with the picker, or paste them with Ctrl or Cmd plus V
  2. Pick JPG, PNG or WebP, set the quality and, if you want smaller files, a maximum size
  3. Wait while the photos convert one at a time; each card shows a preview, its dimensions and its new size
  4. Download a single photo, or press Download all (ZIP) to take every converted photo in one archive

Example

Input

IMG_2041.HEIC · 3.1 MB · 4032×3024

Output

Original size, quality 90 → IMG_2041.jpg · 4032×3024 · 4.7 MB
Max size 2048 px, quality 90 → IMG_2041.jpg · 2048×1536 · 1.9 MB

The same photo saved twice. A full-size JPG is usually larger than the HEIC it came from, because HEIC compresses harder; a size limit is what brings it down.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The JPG is bigger than the HEIC I started with. — HEIC compresses about twice as well as JPG, so a full-size JPG is normally larger. Lower the quality to around 80 or 85, or choose a smaller Max size, to bring the files down.
  • A photo fails with a message that it looks damaged or cut short. — The copy probably did not finish, or the file was written badly by another program. Copy it again from the phone or from iCloud and retry, or share it from Photos as a JPEG.
  • A transparent area came out as a solid colour. — A JPG cannot be transparent, so see-through pixels are filled with the Background colour. Choose PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
  • The page pauses for a moment on each photo. — Decoding a HEIC photo is heavy work done on your own device. A 12-megapixel photo takes under a second on a recent computer and a 48-megapixel one a few seconds; the list shows which photo is being converted.

Frequently asked questions

What is a HEIC file, and why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?
HEIC is the container Apple has used for iPhone and iPad photos since iOS 11. It stores the picture with the HEVC video codec, which needs roughly half the space of an equivalent JPG, and it can carry extras such as several images in one file. The catch is compatibility: many Windows PCs, websites, printers and older apps cannot open it. To make an iPhone shoot JPG instead, go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible.
How do I open a HEIC file on Windows or Android with the HEIC to JPG Converter?
Drop the file on this page and save the JPG, which almost every device and app can open. Windows opens HEIC only after extra codecs are installed from the Microsoft Store, and even then not every program accepts the format. Recent Android versions show HEIC in their own gallery, but sending the file to an app that does not know it fails, whereas a JPG works almost anywhere.
Does the HEIC to JPG Converter lose picture quality?
A little, by design: JPG is a lossy format, so saving discards some fine detail. At the default quality of 90 the difference is very hard to see, and lowering the slider makes smaller files with more visible softening. Choose PNG when nothing may be lost; it is lossless, but each file is several times larger. The converter only resizes when you set a maximum size, and it never enlarges.
Are my iPhone photos uploaded anywhere when I convert them from HEIC to JPG?
No. Each photo is read from your device, decoded and saved again inside this browser tab, so nothing leaves your device, even for a batch of forty. The converted copies exist only in this tab's memory, which is why they are gone when you close the page; download what you want to keep first.
Is the location in my photo kept when I convert HEIC to JPG?
No. The new file is written from the pixels alone, so the EXIF data is not copied: no capture time, no camera model, no lens settings and no GPS coordinates. That makes the JPG safe to share without revealing where it was taken. The original HEIC still has all of it.
How many photos can the HEIC to JPG Converter handle at once, and how big can they be?
Up to 100 photos can sit in the list at once. They are converted one after another rather than together, which keeps memory use steady, so a large batch takes a while. Finished results add up, especially as PNG, so download or clear them if the tab slows down. A photo can be up to 100 megapixels, which is more than the 48 megapixels of the largest iPhone cameras, and a file up to 256 MB. Download the results one at a time or as a single ZIP.
