Surface Area Calculator Online
Calculate the total surface area of spheres, cylinders, cones, boxes, cubes and pyramids with exact formulas. Your dimensions stay on your device.
The Surface Area Calculator runs entirely in your browser. The dimensions you enter are used only to compute a result on your device and are never uploaded to ArrayKit.

About Surface Area Calculator
Surface Area Calculator finds the total surface area of six common 3D shapes — box, cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, and rectangular-base pyramid — from the dimensions you enter. Pick a shape, fill in its length, width, height, radius, or side, and the result updates instantly using the exact geometric formula for that solid, such as 4πr² for a sphere or 2πr(r + h) for a cylinder. It is handy for homework, painting or coating estimates, packaging material calculations, tank or panel fabrication, or any project where you need a quick, accurate surface area without doing the algebra by hand. Enter every dimension in the same unit — inches, centimeters, meters — and the result comes back in that unit squared. Everything computes locally in your browser, so your measurements are never uploaded anywhere.
Features
- Six shapes in one tool: box, cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, and pyramid
- Exact geometric formulas, not approximations
- Only the dimensions relevant to the selected shape are shown
- Instant results as you type, no submit button needed
- Copy a plain-text summary of the shape, dimensions, and surface area
- Clear error message when a dimension is missing or negative
- Works with any consistent unit — the result is that unit squared
- Runs entirely in your browser with nothing uploaded
How to use the Surface Area Calculator
- Choose a shape: box, cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, or pyramid
- Enter the required dimensions using one consistent unit
- Read the computed surface area in that unit squared
- Copy the summary to paste into notes, a spreadsheet, or an email
Example
Input
cube side=2
Output
Surface area: 24
6 × 2² = 24 square units.
Common errors & troubleshooting
- Surface area looks wildly wrong for a cylinder or cone. — Check that you entered the radius, not the diameter — a common mix-up that inflates the area by roughly 4x for cylinders and cones.
- Mixing units, e.g. length in inches and height in centimeters. — Convert every dimension to the same unit before entering it. The Surface Area Calculator does not convert units for you.
- Pyramid result seems off compared to a source that used a different base shape. — This calculator assumes a rectangular base (length × width) with the apex centered above it. A square-base pyramid is just the case where length equals width.
- Banner shows an error even though a number was typed. — Make sure the value is zero or positive — negative dimensions and non-numeric text are rejected.
Frequently asked questions
- What shapes does the Surface Area Calculator support?
- Box, cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, and a rectangular-base pyramid. Select the shape from the toggle at the top and only the dimensions that shape needs are shown.
- What formula does the Surface Area Calculator use for a sphere?
- It uses the standard sphere surface area formula, 4 × π × r², where r is the radius you enter. A radius of 3 gives a surface area of about 113.10 square units.
- How does the Surface Area Calculator handle a cylinder or cone?
- A cylinder's total surface area is 2πr(r + h), which includes both circular ends and the curved side. A cone is πr² for the base plus πr times the slant height for the curved side.
- Can the Surface Area Calculator work in any unit of measurement?
- Yes. Enter every dimension in the same unit — inches, centimeters, meters, or anything else — and the reported surface area is in that unit squared.
- Does the Surface Area Calculator upload my measurements anywhere?
- No. All calculations happen locally in your browser using standard geometry formulas. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or stored by ArrayKit.
- Which measurements does the Surface Area Calculator need for a pyramid?
- The Surface Area Calculator's pyramid mode assumes a rectangular base with the apex centered above it, so the four triangular faces are computed from length, width, and height alone.
