About Fiscal Quarter Calculator
A fiscal year is a calendar year rotated by its start month, and every awkward thing about quarter reporting follows from that. Q1 is whichever quarter opens the financial year, not January to March. Worse, the year's name depends on a convention nobody states: the US federal FY2026 began in October 2025, while the UK and Indian year starting in April 2026 is written 2026-27. This calculator takes a date and a financial calendar and reports the quarter, the year label, the exact start and end dates, how many days are left and how far through both the quarter and the year you are. Presets cover the common calendars, and any start month works.

Common errors & troubleshooting
- The fiscal year label is a year out. — Switch the naming convention. Some organisations name the year after the calendar year it starts in and others after the one it ends in, and the same twelve months can carry either label.
- The quarter does not match the accounting system. — Check the start month first. An April start puts May in Q1, while an October start puts it in Q3, and both are perfectly normal financial years.
- Quarters have different numbers of days. — They do, because months do. A quarter of January to March has 90 days in a common year and 91 in a leap year, while July to September always has 92 — worth remembering before comparing daily run rates.
- The retail calendar dates do not line up. — This tool works in whole calendar months. The 4-5-4 retail calendar builds quarters from whole weeks instead, so its quarter boundaries drift by a few days against the month ends.
Frequently asked questions
- What fiscal quarter is a date in?
- It depends entirely on when the financial year starts. With a January start, August is Q3; with an April start it is Q2; with an October start it is Q4. Enter the start month and this tool works it out.
- When does the US federal fiscal year begin?
- On 1 October, and it is named after the calendar year in which it ends — so FY2026 runs from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026. Federal contractors and agencies work to that calendar.
- Why is the UK financial year written as 2026-27?
- Because it spans two calendar years, from 1 April to 31 March, and the two-part label makes that explicit. India uses the same convention and the same dates.
- How many days are in a fiscal quarter?
- Between 90 and 92, depending on which months it covers and whether February gets its extra day. This tool gives the exact count for the quarter you are in, along with how many are left.
- Can I use a fiscal year that starts mid-month?
- Not here — quarters are built from whole calendar months, which covers the overwhelming majority of financial calendars. Retail 4-5-4 and 52/53-week years need their own week-based arithmetic.
