About ROI Calculator
The ROI Calculator turns an initial investment and a final value into three clear numbers: net return, ROI percent, and — when you add a holding period — annualized ROI. It applies the standard formula ROI = (final value − initial investment) / initial investment × 100, then compounds the result across the years you held the position so you can compare a two-month flip to a five-year hold on equal footing. It is useful for evaluating a stock or fund position, a small business purchase, a real estate flip, a marketing campaign spend, or any deal where you put money in and got a different amount back. Results update as you type, with guards on zero or negative inputs. Everything runs locally in your browser, and figures never leave your device. Estimates only — not financial advice.

Common errors & troubleshooting
- Result shows 'Enter an initial investment greater than 0.' — ROI divides by the initial investment, so that field must be a positive number. Enter the actual amount you put in, not zero.
- Annualized ROI does not appear below the results. — The annualized figure only shows when a holding period in years is entered. Leave it blank for a simple total ROI, or fill it in for a per-year rate.
- ROI is negative and that seems wrong. — A negative ROI means the final value was lower than the initial investment — a loss. Check that the final value field reflects proceeds after any fees or costs, if that matters for your calculation.
- Annualized ROI looks much smaller than the simple ROI percent. — That is expected for multi-year holds — the annualized rate spreads the total gain evenly using compounding, so a 50% total return over 3 years is about 14.47% per year, not 50% / 3.
Frequently asked questions
- What formula does the ROI Calculator use?
- ROI = (final value − initial investment) / initial investment × 100. Net return is simply final value minus initial investment. When you add a holding period in years, annualized ROI is ((final value / initial investment) ^ (1 / years) − 1) × 100.
- Why does the ROI Calculator show an annualized rate as well as total ROI?
- Total ROI tells you the overall percentage gain regardless of how long you held the investment. Annualized ROI compounds that gain evenly per year, so you can fairly compare a short trade against a multi-year hold.
- Can the ROI Calculator handle a loss?
- Yes. If the final value is lower than the initial investment, net return and ROI percent are negative, and the calculator reports the exact loss and percentage the same way it reports a gain.
- Do I have to enter a holding period?
- No. The holding period in years is optional — leave it blank to see net return and ROI percent only. Enter it whenever you want the annualized ROI figure as well.
- Is the ROI Calculator financial advice?
- No. It is a quick estimator based on the numbers you type. It is not financial advice — verify any investment decision with a qualified professional and your own full figures, including fees and taxes.
- Are the investment amounts I enter uploaded anywhere?
- No. The ROI Calculator runs entirely in your browser. The investment and final value figures you type are computed on your device and never sent to ArrayKit.
