About Future Value Calculator
The Future Value Calculator projects what a present sum, an optional stream of periodic payments, or both together will be worth after a given number of periods at a fixed rate. Enter a present value, a periodic interest rate, the number of periods, and an optional recurring payment, and it applies FV = PV x (1 + r)^n plus the future value of an ordinary annuity of the payment. It is built for savers, students, and planners who want a quick projection of an investment, a savings plan, or a fixed-rate deposit without opening a spreadsheet. Results update as you type, with clear guards on negative or missing inputs. Everything runs in your browser, so the amounts you type never leave your device. Figures are estimates only and are not financial advice.
Features
- Projects the future value of a present lump sum

- Combines a present sum and payments in a single result
- Shows total payments contributed and interest earned separately
- Handles a zero interest rate without dividing by zero
- Handles zero periods, returning the present value unchanged
- Tolerates currency symbols and commas in typed numbers
- Runs entirely in your browser with no financial figures uploaded
How to use the Future Value Calculator
- Enter the present value you are starting with
- Enter the interest rate per period as a percent
- Enter the number of periods to project forward
- Optionally enter a payment added at the end of each period
- Read the future value, total payments, and interest earned
Example
Input
$1,000 @ 6% for 5 yr
Output
Future value: $1,338.23
$1,000 growing at 6% per year for 5 years compounds to $1,338.23.
Common errors & troubleshooting
- Result is far higher than expected. — Enter the rate as a percent per period, not a decimal — type 6 for 6%, not 0.06. The Future Value Calculator already divides by 100 internally.
- Future value equals the present value with no growth. — A 0% rate or 0 periods leaves the present value unchanged by design. Increase the rate or the number of periods to see growth.
- Not sure whether to use a periodic payment. — Leave the payment field at 0 to project a single lump sum. Add a payment to also account for a recurring deposit made at the end of every period.
- Numbers with a currency symbol or comma are rejected elsewhere. — This calculator strips commas and currency symbols for you, so $1,000 and 1000 are read the same. Paste figures straight from a statement.
Frequently asked questions
- What formula does the Future Value Calculator use?
- FV = PV x (1 + r)^n for a present sum, plus payment x (((1 + r)^n - 1) / r) for the future value of an ordinary annuity of periodic payments, where r is the rate per period and n is the number of periods.
- Does the Future Value Calculator handle recurring deposits?
- Yes. Enter an amount in the optional payment field and the calculator adds the future value of that recurring, end-of-period payment stream to the future value of your starting sum.
- What is the difference between future value and present value here?
- Future value projects a sum forward in time at a growth rate; present value discounts a future sum back to today. Use the Present Value Calculator when you know a future target and want today's equivalent.
- What period length should I use in the Future Value Calculator?
- Match the rate and the period count: an annual rate with a period count in years, or a monthly rate with a period count in months. The math is identical either way, as long as the rate and periods use the same unit.
- Is the future value figure guaranteed?
- No. The Future Value Calculator produces an estimate only, assuming a fixed rate every period. Actual returns on investments and savings vary and are not guaranteed — this is not financial advice.
- Are the amounts I enter uploaded anywhere?
- No. The Future Value Calculator runs entirely in your browser. The present value, rate, periods, and payment you type are computed on your device and never sent to ArrayKit.
