Roofing Calculator Online
Estimate roof area, roofing squares and shingle bundles from your building footprint and pitch, right in your browser.
The Roofing Calculator runs entirely in your browser. The footprint, pitch and waste figures you enter never leave your device and are not uploaded to ArrayKit.

About Roofing Calculator
The Roofing Calculator turns a building footprint, roof pitch and waste allowance into an estimated roof area, roofing squares and shingle bundle count. It scales the flat footprint by a pitch factor to account for slope, converts that sloped area into squares (100 sq ft each), and adds bundles at roughly three per square plus your chosen waste percentage for cuts, ridges, hips and valleys. Switch between square feet and square meters to match how you measured the footprint. It is useful when you are budgeting a re-roof, comparing contractor quotes, or sizing a material order before a project. Every calculation runs locally in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a final material order.
Features
- Estimates sloped roof area from a flat footprint and pitch
- Converts roof area into roofing squares (100 sq ft units)
- Estimates shingle bundles at roughly three per square
- Adjustable waste allowance for cuts, ridges, hips and valleys
- Toggle between square feet and square meters
- Supports pitches from a flat roof up to steep slopes
- Instant results as you edit any input
- Runs entirely in your browser with nothing uploaded
How to use the Roofing Calculator
- Choose square feet or square meters for your footprint
- Enter the building footprint area
- Enter the roof pitch as rise per 12 (e.g. 6 for a 6/12 pitch)
- Set a waste allowance percentage for cuts and overlaps
- Read the estimated roof area, squares and shingle bundles
Example
Input
2000 sqft, 6/12 pitch
Output
~22.4 squares
A 2000 sq ft footprint at a 6/12 pitch works out to roughly 2236 sq ft of roof, or about 22.4 squares.
Common errors & troubleshooting
- The pitch was entered as a decimal like 0.5 instead of the rise-per-12 number. — Use the rise-per-12 form: a '6/12' roof pitch is entered as 6, not 0.5.
- Roof area looks the same as the footprint area. — Check that a pitch greater than 0 was entered — a pitch of 0 means a flat roof, so the pitch factor stays at 1 and roof area equals footprint area.
- Bundle count seems short once the roof is finished. — Increase the waste allowance — steep roofs, hips, valleys and complex shapes typically need 10-15% or more, not the default minimum.
- Footprint was measured in square meters but entered as square feet. — Use the sq m toggle before typing the footprint so the Roofing Calculator converts it correctly.
Frequently asked questions
- What does the Roofing Calculator estimate?
- It estimates the sloped roof surface area, the number of roofing squares (100 sq ft each) and the number of shingle bundles needed, based on your building footprint, roof pitch and a waste allowance.
- How does the Roofing Calculator account for roof pitch?
- It multiplies the flat footprint by a pitch factor of √(1 + (pitch/12)²), where pitch is the rise per 12 inches of run. A steeper pitch increases the sloped surface area relative to the footprint.
- What is a roofing square?
- A square is the roofing industry's unit of material coverage, equal to 100 square feet of roof surface. The Roofing Calculator divides your estimated roof area by 100 to report squares.
- How many shingle bundles are in a square?
- Most standard three-tab shingle bundles cover about a third of a square, so three bundles typically cover one square. The Roofing Calculator uses this ratio plus your waste allowance to estimate bundles.
- Why does the Roofing Calculator ask for a waste allowance?
- Real roofs need extra material for cuts, starter courses, ridges, hips and valleys. A 10-15% waste allowance is common for simple roofs, and complex roof shapes may need more.
- Is the Roofing Calculator result exact enough to order materials?
- No — it is an estimate for planning and budgeting. Roof shape, dormers, skylights and local building codes all affect the real material count, so verify measurements with a roofing professional before ordering.
