About Tile Calculator
The Tile Calculator figures out how many tiles — and full boxes — you need to cover a floor or wall from your area and tile dimensions. Enter the space you are covering and the size of a single tile, and it works out coverage per tile, applies a waste allowance for cuts and breakage, then rounds up to a whole number of tiles and boxes so you do not come up short mid-job. Switch between imperial (ft/in) and metric (m/cm) units and the math converts automatically. It is built for homeowners planning a bathroom or kitchen retile, DIYers estimating a backsplash, and contractors quoting a flooring job who want a quick, repeatable number before heading to the supplier. Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing about your project is uploaded.
Features
- Calculates tiles needed from area and tile width × height
- Adjustable waste allowance for cuts, breakage, and pattern layout
- Rounds up to whole tiles and whole boxes so you never fall short
- Optional tiles-per-box field converts tiles needed into boxes to buy
- Toggle between imperial (ft/in) and metric (m/cm) units
- Shows coverage per tile and total area including waste
- Copy a plain-text summary of the results for a quote or shopping list
- Runs entirely in your browser with no measurements uploaded
How to use the Tile Calculator
- Choose imperial or metric units
- Enter the floor or wall area you are covering
- Enter the tile width and height, and a waste allowance
- Optionally add tiles per box to see boxes needed
- Read off tiles needed and boxes, or copy the summary
Example
Input
120 sqft, 12×12 in, 10% waste
Output
132 tiles
120 sqft ÷ 1 sqft per 12×12in tile × 1.10 waste, rounded up = 132 tiles.
Common errors & troubleshooting
- Tile count looks too low for a diagonal or herringbone layout. — Diagonal, herringbone, and other complex patterns waste more material from cutting — raise the waste allowance to 15–20% instead of the typical 10% for a straight lay.
- Boxes needed shows 0. — The tiles-per-box field is optional and left out of the count until you fill it in — enter how many tiles come in a box (check the box label) to see boxes to buy.
- Tile size entered in the wrong unit gives a wildly high or low tile count. — Switch the unit toggle to match how you are measuring — imperial expects inches for tile size and square feet for area; metric expects centimeters and square meters.
- Area estimated from room dimensions does not match what is on the invoice. — This is an estimate based on the numbers you enter — remeasure irregular rooms, subtract cutouts like cabinets or tubs, and confirm the final quantity with your supplier before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Tile Calculator?
- It is a tool that converts a floor or wall area and a tile's width and height into the number of tiles you need to buy, plus the number of boxes if you enter how many tiles come per box.
- How much waste allowance should I use in the Tile Calculator?
- 10% is typical for a straight lay on a rectangular room. Use 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns, oddly shaped rooms, or if you are less experienced with tile cuts.
- Does the Tile Calculator support metric measurements?
- Yes. Toggle to m/cm and enter your area in square meters and tile size in centimeters — the calculator converts internally and shows results in the same unit.
- How does the Tile Calculator turn tiles needed into boxes?
- Enter the number of tiles packed per box (printed on the box), and the calculator divides tiles needed by that number and rounds up so you buy whole boxes, not partial ones.
- Is the tile count from this calculator exact enough to order material?
- It is a solid estimate based on the area and tile size you enter, not a substitute for an on-site measurement. Verify the final quantity with your tile supplier before ordering, especially for irregular rooms.
- Does the Tile Calculator upload my room measurements?
- No. The Tile Calculator runs entirely in your browser. The area, tile size, and waste percentage you enter never leave your device.
