Common errors & troubleshooting
Per-person amount looks too high for a small group. — Check the number of people field — it defaults to 1, so leaving it unchanged calculates the full total for a single payer, not a split.
Tip amount seems too large after entering a total that already includes tax. — Turn on 'Tip on pre-tax amount' and enter the sales tax percentage already included in the bill so the Tip Calculator tips on the subtotal, not the tax.
Result shows a banner instead of a total. — Make sure the bill, tip percentage and number of people are all 0 or more, and that at least 1 person is entered.
Custom tip percentage was typed as a decimal like 0.2 instead of 20. — Enter the tip as a whole percentage, e.g. 20 for 20% — the Tip Calculator divides by 100 internally.

How does the Tip Calculator work out the tip amount?
It multiplies the bill (or the pre-tax subtotal, if that toggle is on) by the tip percentage divided by 100: tip = base × tip% / 100. The total is the bill plus the tip.
Can the Tip Calculator split the bill between people?
Yes. Enter the number of people and the Tip Calculator divides both the total and the tip evenly, showing the per-person amount and the tip share per person.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or tax-included amount?
Either is common. The Tip Calculator defaults to tipping on the full bill; turn on 'Tip on pre-tax amount' and enter the tax percentage already in the bill to tip only on the subtotal instead.
