Lossless targets skip the bitrate question entirely because it does not apply. Common errors & troubleshooting
- Converting MP3 to WAV did not improve the sound. — Quality lost to lossy encoding never comes back — WAV just stores the MP3's sound losslessly from here on. Convert to WAV for tool compatibility, not restoration.
- The FLAC output is bigger than the source MP3. — Expected: FLAC losslessly preserves the decoded audio, which needs more bytes than the MP3's discarded-detail representation. Archive in FLAC only from lossless sources like WAV or CD rips.
- A 320 kbps re-encode of a 128 kbps file sounds no better. — It cannot — the detail was removed by the first encoding. Higher bitrates only help when converting from a better source; re-encoding lossy to lossy always costs a little more quality.
- The converted file has no sound at the start. — Some encoders add a few milliseconds of priming silence — normal for MP3 and AAC, and players skip it. Gapless-sensitive uses like loops prefer WAV or FLAC, which have none.

- Which audio format should I choose?
- MP3 for anything that must play anywhere; M4A for slightly better quality per byte in modern ecosystems; OGG for games and open stacks; WAV when an editor or DAW demands raw PCM; FLAC for archiving originals losslessly at roughly half WAV size.
- What bitrate should I use for MP3?
- 192 kbps is transparent for speech and casual music listening; 320 kbps is the format's practical ceiling for critical listening; 96–128 kbps suits voice notes where size wins. The estimate updates as you choose.
- Can I convert a video file's audio track?
- Yes — drop the video directly. The video stream is discarded and the soundtrack is decoded and re-encoded to your chosen format, which is exactly how “video to MP3” works everywhere.
- What is the difference between lossy and lossless formats?
- Lossy formats (MP3, AAC, Vorbis) permanently discard detail deemed inaudible to hit small sizes; lossless formats (WAV, FLAC) keep every sample. Converting lossy→lossless preserves what remains but restores nothing — the direction of loss is one-way.
- Why convert on-device instead of an upload service?
- Recordings are often private — interviews, meetings, demos. Processing locally means the material never crosses the network, and there is no queue: conversion speed is your machine's, not a shared server's.
