Common errors & troubleshooting
An emoji I pasted shows up as an empty box or a question mark. — The app you pasted into uses a font with no picture for that emoji, usually because the emoji is newer than the system. The detail panel shows which Emoji version it belongs to, so you can choose an older one or update the device.
Flags appear as two letters, such as US or IN, on Windows. — Windows draws a country flag as its two-letter code. That is a system limitation, not a problem with the copied text, and the same emoji shows as a flag on macOS, iOS and Android.
The skin tone I picked did not change this emoji. — Only emoji with skin-tone variants change, such as hands and people. Faces, animals, objects and flags have none, so they keep their normal look.
Clicking an emoji says it could not be copied. — Some browsers block clipboard access in embedded or insecure pages. The picker then places the emoji in the Compose box, where you can select it and press Ctrl+C or Cmd+C.
Frequently asked questions
How do I paste an emoji from the Emoji Picker into another app?
Click the emoji to copy it, switch to the other app, click where you want it and press Ctrl+V, or Cmd+V on a Mac. On a phone, press and hold in the text field and choose Paste. Emoji are ordinary text characters, so they paste into messages, documents, spreadsheets, social posts and form fields alike.
Why does an emoji from the Emoji Picker look different on iPhone, Android and Windows?
Unicode defines each emoji's code point and name, not its artwork. Apple, Google, Microsoft and others each draw their own pictures, so the same grinning face looks different on each system. The character you copy is identical; only the way the receiving device draws it changes.
Why does an emoji from the Emoji Picker show as a box on my device?
A box means the font on that device has no picture for the character. New emoji need a recent system or app update. The detail panel shows each emoji's version and marks anything from version 15 on as a recent addition, while older emoji draw almost everywhere.
How do skin tones work in the Emoji Picker?
Unicode has five skin-tone modifiers, from light to dark, that follow a hand or person emoji. Choose a tone above the grid and every emoji with variants uses it, while the rest stay as they are. Your choice is remembered, and the detail panel lists the default plus all five variants for any emoji that has them.
What are the code points, shortcodes and HTML entities in the Emoji Picker for?
A code point such as U+1F600 is the emoji's permanent number in Unicode, handy for looking it up or writing it in code. A shortcode like :grinning: is the short name that chat tools and Markdown editors such as GitHub and Slack turn into the emoji. An HTML entity such as 😀 places the emoji in a web page without typing it.
Where does the Emoji Picker keep my recent emoji?
In your browser's local storage on this device, as a list of up to 32 emoji with the newest first, next to your chosen skin tone. Nothing you search or copy is uploaded, and nothing syncs between devices. Press Clear in the Recent row, or clear the site's data in your browser, to remove it.
