Excel Formula Explainer Online
Paste any Excel or Google Sheets formula and see what each function and argument does, in the order it is evaluated, with problems flagged and a tidy copy to reuse, all in your browser.
The Excel Formula Explainer runs entirely in your browser. The formulas you paste are analysed on your device and never uploaded or logged by ArrayKit.
The Excel Formula Explainer reads a formula the way Excel does and tells you what it means. It tokenizes the text, builds the full expression tree with the real operator precedence, then describes every function, argument, operator and cell reference in plain English. A numbered order of evaluation runs from the innermost call outwards, so a nested IF or an IFERROR wrapped around VLOOKUP stops being a puzzle. A built-in dictionary of more than 120 functions supplies each argument's role, and unfamiliar names are listed as custom rather than rejected. The checker reports unbalanced brackets with their position, wrong argument counts, text numbers in quotes and volatile or whole-column patterns. Commas and semicolons both work. The analysis is deterministic and runs on your device, and no formula is uploaded.
Features
Plain-English summary plus a collapsible part-by-part tree of the whole formula
Numbered order of evaluation, innermost function first
Dictionary of 120+ Excel and Google Sheets functions with each argument explained
Understands sheet references, whole rows and columns, named ranges, table references and array constants
Checks bracket balance and argument counts, and reports exact positions
Step 1: Looks for the value in cell A2 in the first column of Prices!$A$2:$C$500 and returns column 3 of the same row, using FALSE as the match type.
Step 2: Tries the result of step 1. If that produces any error, returns "Not found" instead.
Note: none, the lookup range is fully anchored and the match is exact.
The inner lookup is evaluated first, then IFERROR decides whether to show its result or the fallback text.
Common errors & troubleshooting
The formula is rejected with a missing parenthesis message. — The explainer points at the opening bracket that is never closed. Count the brackets after nested functions and add the missing one at the end of that call.
Excel reports too many or too few arguments. — The checker names the function, the allowed argument count and its signature. IFS and the SUMIFS family also need arguments in complete pairs.
The formula is split by commas inside quoted text. — Text between double quotes is read as one value, and a quote inside it is written as two. If a stray quote is missing, the explainer reports where the unterminated text starts.
A pasted formula from another language fails to parse. — Semicolon separators with decimal commas are detected automatically. Function names in other languages show as unknown functions, so translate them to English names first.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Excel Formula Explainer work out what a formula does?
It parses the formula into a tree using Excel's operator precedence, then looks up each function in a built-in dictionary. Every part is described from templates written for that function, so the result is consistent and does not guess.
Can the Excel Formula Explainer break down a nested IF formula?
Yes. Nested IFs are numbered from the innermost one outwards, and each step refers back to the earlier step it uses. The tree also lets you collapse branches, so long chains of conditions stay readable.
Does the explainer know about newer functions like XLOOKUP, LET and FILTER?
Yes, the dictionary includes dynamic-array and lambda-style functions and labels those that need Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365. Google Sheets functions such as QUERY and ARRAYFORMULA are included and marked as Sheets only.
What happens when the explainer meets a function it does not recognise?
It keeps going. The function is shown as unknown with its arguments listed in order, and a note explains that it could be a custom function, an add-in, a very new function or a typo.
Can the explainer fix my broken formula automatically?
It does not rewrite your formula. It shows where the problem is, such as the position of a missing bracket or the expected argument count, so you can correct it yourself, then offers a formatted copy of formulas that parse.
Will the explainer tell me what values my cells contain?
No. It explains how the formula is built, not what is in your spreadsheet. It has no access to your workbook, and cell references are described by their address, anchoring and size.
