Excel Formula Generator
Pick a task, type your cell references and get a correct Excel or Google Sheets formula with a plain-English explanation, built on your device from tested templates.
Formulas are assembled in your browser from built-in templates. The cell references and criteria you type never leave your device and nothing is uploaded.
This Excel formula generator is a library of more than eighty recipes, not a guessing engine. You search or browse a task such as conditional sums, lookups, text splitting, date arithmetic, ranking or dynamic arrays, then fill a small form with your own cells and ranges. The formula updates as you type, with references checked, sheet names with spaces quoted for you, and text criteria wrapped in quotes with embedded quotes doubled. Each recipe shows the Excel formula, the Google Sheets version when it differs, a sentence-by-sentence explanation, and the oldest Excel release that can run it. A separator switch changes commas to semicolons for locales that use a decimal comma. The same input always gives the same output, and nothing you type leaves your device.
Features
More than 80 recipes across sums and counts, logic, lookup, text, dates, finance, ranking and dynamic arrays

Cell and range fields are validated, with sheet names that need quotes quoted automatically
Excel and Google Sheets versions side by side when the functions differ, such as SORT or TEXTSPLIT
Comma or semicolon argument separator for locales that write decimals with a comma
Compatibility badge on every recipe, from any Excel version to Excel 365 only
Plain-English explanation and a worked example for each formula
Copy button on every formula, with example values filled in so the page is never empty
How to use the Excel Formula Generator
Search for a function or task, or browse a category, and pick the recipe closest to what you need
Replace the example cells with your own references, such as B2:B500 or Sheet1!A2
Choose the comma or semicolon separator that matches your spreadsheet language
Read the explanation, then copy the Excel or Google Sheets formula
Paste it into your sheet and test it on a few rows you can check by hand before filling down
Example
Input
Recipe: Sum with several conditions (SUMIFS)
Range to add up: D2:D500
First range / condition: A2:A500 / North
Second range / condition: C2:C500 / >100
Output
=SUMIFS(D2:D500,A2:A500,"North",C2:C500,">100")
With the semicolon separator:
=SUMIFS(D2:D500;A2:A500;"North";C2:C500;">100")
The condition >100 is turned into the quoted text ">100" that SUMIFS expects.
Common errors & troubleshooting
Excel shows #NAME? after pasting the formula. — The function does not exist in your Excel version. Check the compatibility badge: XLOOKUP, FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE and TEXTSPLIT need Excel 365 or 2021, and IFS, TEXTJOIN and MAXIFS need Excel 2019.
Excel says there is a problem with the formula as soon as it is pasted. — Your Excel probably expects semicolons between arguments. Switch the separator to Semicolon and copy the formula again.
The result is a number like 45731 instead of a date. — Date formulas return a day number. Format the result cells as Short Date, or as Number for formulas that count days.
A lookup or conditional sum returns the wrong answer for values that look identical. — Check for trailing spaces and numbers stored as text in the source columns. The Remove extra spaces recipe cleans text first.
Frequently asked questions
How is the Excel Formula Generator different from asking an AI to write a formula?
It uses fixed, tested templates rather than a language model. You choose a recipe and supply references, so the structure is always the one documented for that task, and the same inputs always give exactly the same formula.
Does the Excel Formula Generator also produce Google Sheets formulas?
Yes. When Sheets needs a different formula, for example SPLIT instead of TEXTSPLIT or TRUE and FALSE instead of 1 and -1 in SORT, a second block shows the Sheets version. When both are identical it says so.
What does the semicolon separator option do in the Excel Formula Generator?
Spreadsheets set to languages that use a decimal comma, such as German or French, expect semicolons between function arguments. The switch rewrites every argument separator for you while leaving commas inside text, such as a delimiter of ", ", untouched.
Which Excel versions can run the formulas from the Excel Formula Generator?
Each recipe carries a badge with the oldest version it needs. Most work in any Excel, some need 2007 or 2010, a few need 2019, and the dynamic-array recipes need Excel 365 or 2021.
Can I use formulas from the Excel Formula Generator across worksheets?
Yes. Type the reference with a sheet name, like Sheet1!A2:A100. If the name contains spaces or punctuation the generator adds the single quotes Excel requires, for example 'Sales Data'!A2:A100.
Why does a recipe in the Excel Formula Generator lock some ranges with dollar signs?
Lookup tables, rank ranges and totals must stay fixed when you fill the formula down a column. The generator anchors those ranges with dollar signs and leaves the cell that should move relative, so the formula copies correctly.
