JSON to Excel Converter

Paste or drop JSON — an API response, an array of records, even NDJSON — and get a typed .xlsx workbook with nested keys flattened into columns, all in your browser.

Your JSON is parsed and converted on your device. Nothing is uploaded to ArrayKit, so API responses and exports containing private data stay with you.

About JSON to Excel Converter

The JSON to Excel Converter turns the data you paste from an API, a log or a database export into a workbook you can sort and filter. It accepts an array of objects, an object holding several arrays, an array of arrays, a single record, and newline-delimited JSON. Nested objects are flattened into columns named like address.city, and you choose what happens to lists inside a record: join them into one cell, spread them over columns such as tags[0], explode them into one row per item, or send them to a child sheet linked by a parent_row column. Numbers stay numbers, true and false stay booleans, null becomes an empty cell, and ISO date strings can become real Excel dates. If the JSON is invalid, the error names the line and column. Large documents are processed in pieces, entirely on your device.

Features

  • Accepts arrays of objects, objects of arrays, arrays of arrays, single records and NDJSON
  • Flattens nested keys with a separator you choose, such as address.city
  • Four ways to treat lists in a record: join, spread across columns, one row per item or a child sheet
  • One sheet per top-level array, plus an optional Properties sheet for the remaining values
  • Keeps numbers and booleans typed, empties null, and turns ISO dates into real dates
  • Column order: as first seen, alphabetical, or your own list first
  • Error messages that point at the line and column of a syntax mistake
  • Download .xlsx with a styled, frozen header, or CSV for one sheet or a zip of all sheets

How to use the JSON to Excel Converter

  1. Paste the JSON, drop a .json or .ndjson file, or load one of the examples
  2. Pick how lists inside a record are handled and check the flattened columns in the preview
  3. Optionally set a start key such as data.items, reorder columns and choose the header styling
  4. Download the .xlsx, or the CSV if you only need one sheet

Example

Input

[{"id": 1, "name": "Ann", "joined": "2024-03-05", "address": {"city": "Leeds"}, "tags": ["admin", "beta"]},
 {"id": 2, "name": "Bo", "joined": "2024-04-18", "address": {"city": "Austin"}, "tags": []}]

Output

id | name | joined | address.city | tags
1 | Ann | 2024-03-05 | Leeds | admin, beta
2 | Bo | 2024-04-18 | Austin |

The nested city becomes its own column, the list is joined into one cell, and joined is a real Excel date.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The converter reports an error at a line and column. — Go to that position: the usual causes are a trailing comma before a closing bracket, single quotes instead of double quotes, an unquoted key, or a missing comma between two items. The message names which one it found.
  • Only one sheet appears, but the JSON has several lists. — Lists nested inside records are joined into a cell by default. Switch Lists inside a record to Separate sheet to get a child sheet, or paste the object that holds the lists at the top level.
  • A date shows as text such as 2024-03-05T09:30:00Z. — Turn on Dates become real dates. Only complete ISO 8601 values are converted; other formats such as 03/05/2024 are left as text because their order is ambiguous.
  • The spreadsheet has far more rows than the JSON has records. — One row per item is selected, so each list item became a row. Choose Join into one cell or Spread across columns to keep one row per record.

Frequently asked questions

How does the JSON to Excel Converter flatten nested objects?
Each nested key becomes a column whose name joins the path with a separator, so {"user": {"city": "Leeds"}} gives user.city. The separator is editable, and if two keys would flatten to the same name the second gets a (2) suffix instead of overwriting the first.
What happens to an array of objects inside a JSON record?
You choose. Join writes it as one cell, Spread across columns creates items[0].name style columns, One row per item repeats the parent fields on each row, and Separate sheet writes the items to a child sheet whose parent_row column holds the Excel row number of the parent record.
Can I convert newline-delimited JSON to Excel?
Yes. If the text is one JSON value per line, the converter reads each line as a record, and a bad line is reported by its line number. This covers .ndjson and .jsonl exports and log files.
Why do JSON numbers stay numbers but digit strings stay text?
The converter keeps the type JSON gives each value. A number such as 42 becomes a numeric cell, while a string such as "02134" stays text, so IDs and ZIP codes written as strings are never changed.
How does the JSON to Excel Converter handle very large files?
It processes the records in slices so the page stays responsive, and shows the first 50 rows as a preview. The practical limit is your device's memory and Excel's 1,048,576 rows per sheet, which the tool warns about.
Which tool converts a spreadsheet back into JSON?
Use Excel to JSON for the reverse direction, or CSV to JSON for delimited text. This tool only goes from JSON to a workbook, so it never changes the original JSON you paste.
