Extract Links from PDF

Collect every clickable link and every address merely printed on the page, with the pages they sit on.

Pages are read in this tab and no address is ever requested — nothing is fetched, followed or reported. The PDFs stay on your device.

About Extract Links from PDF

A PDF keeps links in two unrelated places, and most exports only look at one. Clickable links are annotations — a rectangle with an action behind it. Printed addresses are just text: www.example.com typed into a brochure is not clickable at all, and a long URL is usually broken across two lines. Both are collected here, the wrapped ones stitched back together, and an address that is both printed and linked to the same place counts once rather than twice. Each row shows the address, what kind of link it is, the words it sits under and the pages it appears on. Nothing is ever fetched: the reading happens on your device and addresses are reported exactly as the document stores them.

Features

  • Clickable annotations and addresses written into the text, gathered in one list
  • Addresses broken across a line are rejoined before they are counted
  • Emails, internal page jumps and links that open a file or a script are told apart
  • The anchor text under each rectangle, so you can see how a link was labelled
  • Merge duplicates, filter by kind or by domain, and sort by page or by domain
  • Several PDFs at once, with the source file kept on every row
  • CSV and plain-text exports that carry every row, not only the ones on screen
  • A warning when a link opens an attachment or runs a script instead of a web page

How to use the Extract Links from PDF

  1. Drop one or more PDFs onto the page
  2. Wait while each page's annotations and text layer are read
  3. Filter by kind or domain, or turn off Merge duplicates to see every occurrence
  4. Copy the list, or download it as CSV with the page numbers

Example

Input

conference-programme.pdf — 48 pages

Output

214 occurrences · 96 unique URLs · 31 domains · 12 emails · 40 internal jumps → conference-programme-links.csv

Internal jumps are page references, so they stay out of the plain URL list.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • Nothing was found in a document full of addresses. — A scan has no text layer and usually no annotations either, so there is nothing to read. Run PDF OCR first, then extract again.
  • A listed link is dead. — Addresses are never visited, so a dead or redirected URL still appears exactly as stored. Checking whether one resolves is a separate step you take in a browser.
  • Two rows look like the same address. — They differ somewhere that matters. Only the scheme, a leading www., host capitalisation, default ports, a trailing slash and an empty fragment are ignored when merging — query strings and paths are kept, because they point at different pages.
  • An address printed across a line break came out truncated. — It is rejoined when the break looks like part of the address, after a hyphen or a path-like slash. A break after a full stop ends a sentence instead, so it is left alone; check the wording on that page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the extraction visit the addresses or test whether they work?
No. Nothing is fetched, resolved or expanded, not even a shortened link. Every address is reported as the document stores it, which is exactly why a dead URL still shows up in the list.
What is the difference between a clickable link and a text link in the results?
A clickable link is an annotation a reader can activate. A text link is an address typed onto the page that nobody ever made clickable — it reads like a link on paper, but tapping it does nothing.
Why do some rows say “File / launch” instead of showing a web address?
Because the link opens another document, an attachment or a script rather than a page. Those are worth reading closely before you trust a PDF that came from outside.
Can I collect the links from a whole folder of reports at once?
Yes. Drop the PDFs together and every row keeps the file it came from, so a single CSV can cover the batch and you can still see which document each address belongs to.
Are jumps to other pages inside the document included?
Yes, resolved to a page number where possible and to the destination name when they cannot be resolved. They are left out of the plain address list, since “page 12” is not a URL.
