Markup is parsed, sanitised and drawn in this tab, and nothing a drawing references is fetched from anywhere. The files are not uploaded.

Tidy the drawing before converting

About SVG to PDF

Printing a drawing through a browser hands you a picture of it; a real conversion keeps the geometry. Path data, rectangles, circles, ellipses, lines and polygons are re-expressed as Bézier outlines and written as PDF path operators, so the result scales without pixels and stays small. Not everything can go that way — text needs fonts, and gradients, patterns, filters, masks, clip paths, markers and embedded pictures have no direct equivalent — so each drawing is scanned first and the features that need rendering are listed against it before you commit. Auto keeps vectors when a file is clean and renders the rest at 150, 300 or 600 dpi; Vector and Raster let you force the decision either way. Everything is parsed and drawn on your device.

Features

  • Shapes and paths written as real PDF vector geometry, not a picture of the drawing
  • Each file scanned up front: element inventory, intrinsic size, and which features need rendering
  • Auto, Vector and Raster modes, with the rendered fallback at 150, 300 or 600 dpi
  • Vector mode states exactly what it left out or simplified, per drawing
  • Page fitted to the artwork, or A4 or Letter with orientation and a margin
  • Several drawings become one PDF with a page each, or a PDF per drawing in a ZIP
  • Paste markup straight in, and .svgz files are accepted alongside .svg
  • Scripts, event handlers and references to other servers are stripped before anything is drawn

How to use the SVG to PDF

  1. Drop your .svg files, or paste the markup
  2. Read each badge: green can stay vector, amber needs rendering
  3. Choose Auto, Vector or Raster, then the page size and margin
  4. Convert, and take the PDF or the ZIP

Example

Input

logo.svg — 34 elements, no text, no gradients

Output

logo.pdf — vector paths, page fitted to the artwork, 9 KB

Auto kept it vector because nothing in the file needed rendering.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The lettering in my drawing disappeared in Vector mode. — Vector output has no font to draw it with, so text elements are left out and the note says how many. Use Auto, which sends that drawing down the rendered path instead, or convert the text to outlines in your drawing program first.
  • A gradient came out as one flat colour. — Vector mode approximates a gradient with its average colour. Auto or Raster reproduces the gradient exactly as the drawing describes it, at the cost of editable geometry.
  • The rendered page is softer than the resolution I picked. — A very large page at 600 dpi exceeds what a canvas can hold, so the resolution is lowered and a note names the file it happened to. Choose a smaller page size or a lower resolution.
  • A file would not load at all. — Either the markup does not parse as XML, or the file is over the 25 MB limit. Paste a trimmed copy into the markup box to get the parser's verdict straight away.

Frequently asked questions

When is a drawing kept as vectors and when is it rendered?
Auto keeps it vector only when nothing in the file needs a browser to draw it. Text, embedded pictures, gradients, patterns, filters, masks, clip paths, markers and use references each send that drawing down the rendered path instead.
Will the page still be sharp when it is blown up for a poster?
A vector page will, at any size at all. A rendered page is only as sharp as the resolution you chose, so pick 600 dpi for anything that will be printed large.
Can I turn a folder of icons into a single document?
Yes. Drop them all in and choose one PDF with a page each, or choose a PDF per drawing and take them back as a ZIP, each named after its own file.
What happens to a drawing that pulls a font or a picture off the web?
Those references are removed before anything is drawn, and the count is shown, so the drawing is converted as it stands rather than as it would look online. Embed what you need inside the file first.
Which page size suits an icon or a diagram?
Fit to the SVG makes the page exactly the artwork's own proportions, which is what you want for something that will be placed into another document. A4 or Letter with a margin is for pages that get printed on their own.
