Online Metronome
Set a tempo from 20 to 300 BPM, pick a time signature, accent the beats you want and tap along to find a song's speed. The clicks are synthesised in your browser.
The clicks are generated on your device, and your tempo, meter and sound choices are remembered in this browser only. No audio is recorded or sent anywhere.
The Online Metronome plays steady clicks from 20 to 300 BPM and names the tempo as you change it, from Largo to Prestissimo. Pick a time signature from 1/4 to 12/8 or set your own beat count, divide each beat into eighths, triplets or sixteenths, and press the beat dots to make any beat an accent, a normal click or a silent rest. Tap tempo averages your last few taps to find a song's speed. Clicks are scheduled on the browser's audio clock a fraction of a second ahead instead of being fired from a timer, so the timing stays tight even while the page is busy. A speed trainer raises the tempo by a set amount every few bars until it reaches your target. Every sound is made on your device.

Common errors & troubleshooting
The metronome is silent when I press Start. — Browsers allow audio only after a click or key press on the page, and the Start button counts. If it stays silent, check that the tab is not muted and the volume slider is up, then press Stop and Start again.
The clicks sound uneven after I switch to another tab. — Browsers slow background timers. The metronome looks ahead to cover this, but the steadiest result comes from keeping the tab in view with the screen awake.
6/8 only plays two clicks per bar. — In compound time the BPM counts dotted-quarter beats, so 6/8 has two beats per bar. Choose the Triplets subdivision to hear all six eighth notes.
Tap tempo shows a strange number. — Tap at least four times at a steady pace. A pause longer than two and a half seconds starts a new count, and a single missed tap is ignored.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the timing of the Online Metronome?
Each click is handed to the browser's audio engine slightly ahead of time and played on its own high-resolution clock, so the spacing between clicks does not depend on how busy the page is. The only offset is your device's output latency, which delays every click equally.
What BPM should I set on the Online Metronome for a song?
Press Tap tempo along with the recording and it averages your last taps. To learn a fast passage, start around 60 to 70 percent of the target and let the speed trainer raise the tempo a few BPM every few bars.
How does the Online Metronome count compound time such as 6/8 and 12/8?
It counts the dotted quarter note as the beat, the way compound time is usually conducted, so 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 have 2, 3 and 4 beats per bar. The BPM is that pulse, and the tool shows the equivalent quarter-note pace. Choose Triplets to hear every eighth note inside each beat.
How does tap tempo work in the Online Metronome?
Press the Tap tempo button, or the T key, at least twice. It averages up to your last six taps, leaves out an interval that is far off the rest, and starts a new count after a pause of more than 2.5 seconds.
What does the speed trainer in the Online Metronome do?
It starts at your chosen tempo and raises it by a set number of BPM every few bars, for example 5 BPM every 4 bars, until it reaches the ceiling you set. Changing the tempo by hand restarts the climb from the new value.
Why does the Online Metronome need a click before it can make sound?
Browsers block audio from pages until you interact with them, to stop sites playing sound unprompted. Pressing Start counts as that interaction, so the metronome can begin the moment you do.
