vCard QR Code Generator

Turn a name, phone numbers, email and address into a contact QR code that phones can save in a tap, with a density meter that tells you whether it will scan, all in your browser.

The vCard QR Code Generator builds the card and draws the code in your browser. The names, numbers and addresses you type are not uploaded or kept after you leave the page.

About vCard QR Code Generator

vCard QR Code Generator builds the square that adds you to someone's address book when they point a camera at it. It writes your details as a standard vCard, or the shorter MECARD format, escapes commas, semicolons and line breaks so a note or address cannot corrupt the card, and folds long lines the way the specification requires. The catch with contact codes is size: every field adds bytes, and more bytes mean a denser pattern that is harder to scan from a small print. So the tool shows the payload, counts its bytes, rates the density from the QR version the card needs, and suggests what to drop, such as the note, the address or a second phone number. Everything is assembled on your device and the contact details are never uploaded.

Features

  • Choose vCard 3.0 for the widest compatibility, vCard 4.0, or the shorter MECARD format
  • Name, organisation, job title, up to five phone numbers, three emails and three websites, address, note and birthday
  • Density meter that rates the code Low, Medium, High or Too big from the QR version it needs
  • Concrete slimming tips, such as dropping the note or address, with the version each change would save
  • Escapes commas, semicolons, backslashes and line breaks, and folds long lines at 75 bytes
  • Adds https:// to website addresses that lack it and checks phone and email characters
  • Live read-back check that decodes the exact code you are about to download
  • Downloads PNG, SVG or a standalone .vcf file, plus a copy button for the raw card text

How to use the vCard QR Code Generator

  1. Fill in a name or an organisation, then add the phone numbers, emails and websites people will really use
  2. Pick vCard 3.0, vCard 4.0 or MECARD, and watch the density meter as you add fields
  3. If the meter reads High, follow the tips: drop the note or address, or switch to MECARD
  4. Check that the read-back says the code scans, then download the PNG or SVG, or the .vcf file

Example

Input

Jane Doe, Studio Lane, +1 415 555 0134, jane@studiolane.example

Output

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:Doe;Jane;;;
FN:Jane Doe
ORG:Studio Lane
TEL;TYPE=CELL:+1 415 555 0134
EMAIL;TYPE=INTERNET:jane@studiolane.example
END:VCARD

147 bytes: QR version 8 at level M, Medium density

Real vCards use CRLF line breaks; each line here stands for one. Dropping a field lowers the version.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The phone scans the code but never offers to add a contact. — Some cameras ignore MECARD. Switch the format to vCard 3.0, which both iPhone and Android cameras recognise.
  • The code will not scan from a small business card. — It is too dense for that print size. Watch the density meter: drop the note, the address or a second phone number, lower error correction to L, or print the code larger.
  • An accented name looks garbled after scanning. — The card is valid UTF-8, but very old scanner apps assume Latin-1 when a code carries no encoding marker. Try the phone's built-in camera or a current scanner app.
  • The tool says the card is too big for a QR code. — A code holds at most 2,331 bytes at level M, and far less than that scans comfortably. Remove the note and address first, then extra phone numbers and websites.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between vCard 3.0, vCard 4.0 and MECARD in a contact QR code?
vCard 3.0 is the safe default and is read by iPhone and Android cameras. vCard 4.0 is the newer revision and is supported less consistently. MECARD is a compact format that gives a smaller, easier-to-scan code, though not every phone camera offers to save it.
Why is my vCard QR code so dense and how do I make it easier to scan?
Every field adds bytes, and more bytes raise the QR version, which adds modules and makes each one smaller at a given print size. Keep one phone and one email, drop the note and address, shorten the website, lower error correction to L, or use MECARD.
Will an iPhone or Android camera add the contact straight from a vCard QR code?
Both recognise a vCard code and offer to create a contact. The person scanning still reviews the details and taps save, so nothing is added to their address book without their confirmation.
Can I put a photo or logo inside a vCard QR code?
Not inside the card. A contact photo is tens of kilobytes and a QR code holds about two at most. Link to a profile page instead, or style the code itself with a logo using the QR Code with Logo tool.
How do I download the contact as a .vcf file instead of a QR code?
Use the Download .vcf button. It saves the same card as a vCard file you can email or import. A .vcf is always a vCard, so choosing MECARD still produces a version 3.0 file.
Are the contact details I type into the vCard QR Code Generator stored anywhere?
No. The card is assembled and the code drawn in your browser, and nothing is saved when you leave the page. Remember that a QR code is not encrypted: anyone who photographs it can read every field.
