A plain transcript of handwritten notes throws away most of what made them notes. The indent that marked a sub-point, the column down the right-hand side, the box around the thing you had to remember, the gap where you stopped writing — all of it collapses into one run of prose. This keeps the geometry. Recognition reports where each word sat as well as what it said, so every word is redrawn in a typeface at that position, and the shape of the page comes through with it. Reflow mode is there for when you would rather have running text, and scan mode leaves the handwriting alone and puts the text behind it so the page becomes searchable.
Features
Every recognised word redrawn at the position it was written
Word size matched to the space the handwriting occupied
Reflow mode joins the lines into paragraphs where the gaps say a section ended
Scan mode keeps the handwriting and hides a searchable text layer behind it
Photographs and scanned PDFs both accepted
Sans, serif or monospace output
Nine handwriting languages
Confidence reported honestly, with faint marks left out rather than guessed at
How to use the Handwriting to Text
Drop in a photo or a PDF of the handwritten pages
Choose whether to keep the layout, reflow it, or just clean the scan
Pick the language the notes are written in
Read the recognised text, then download the PDF or the plain text
Example
Input
A photographed page: heading, four indented lines, a boxed note
Output
notes-typed.pdf — 1 page, 63 words, 81% average confidence
The indent survives because each word keeps its own position on the page.
Common errors & troubleshooting
Hardly anything was recognised. — Handwriting recognition needs a flat, sharp, evenly lit page. Re-photograph it square-on without a shadow across the paper, and make sure the writing fills most of the frame.
The words are in the right places but the wrong size. — Word size is taken from the space the handwriting filled, so large loose writing sets large. Reflow mode ignores the original sizing and sets everything at one size.
Words are missing from the output. — Faint marks below the confidence threshold are left out rather than guessed at, and the count is reported with the result. Anything written quickly is the usual casualty.
It is very slow on a long document. — Handwriting is much slower to recognise than print, so the first fifteen pages are processed and the rest reported. Split a long document and run the parts separately.
Some characters are missing from the PDF. — The built-in PDF typefaces cover Latin scripts. Characters outside them are counted and reported rather than dropped silently, and the plain text download keeps everything.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is it on real handwriting?
Less accurate than on print, and it depends heavily on the hand. Neat, separated letters read well; a fast cursive scrawl often does not. The average confidence is shown with every result so you know what you are looking at, and names, numbers and dates always deserve checking.
What does keeping the layout actually mean?
Each word is drawn at the coordinates it was found at, scaled to the page. Anything you expressed with position — an indent, a margin note, two columns, a gap between sections — is still there, because position is preserved rather than reconstructed.
When should I use reflow instead?
When you want to read or reuse the words rather than look at the page. Reflow joins lines into paragraphs, breaking where the vertical gaps say one section ended, and sets the result as ordinary running text.
What is scan mode for?
Keeping the original. Your handwriting stays exactly as photographed and the recognised words go behind it invisibly, so the page can be searched and copied from without pretending the transcription is perfect.
Does anything leave my device?
The pages do not. Recognition runs in the browser, and the language data it needs is fetched once and cached. Notes, journals and letters are exactly the kind of thing that should not be uploaded to be read.
