About PDF to Handwriting

What makes typed text look typed is not the letterforms — it is the regularity. Every glyph sits at exactly the same height on exactly the same baseline, which no hand has ever managed. This reads the words out of your PDF, lays them onto a page of ruled, gridded or plain paper, and writes each character with a small independent shift in position, slant and size, plus a drift in where each line starts. The result is a document of written pages rather than a font substitution. Only the words come across: tables, images and columns are not reproduced.

Features

  • Reads the text layer and rewrites it as written pages
  • Four hands, five papers — ruled, exercise book, grid, plain and aged
  • Five ink colours including pencil
  • Untidiness control from perfectly even to genuinely irregular
  • Choose which pages of the source to rewrite
  • Optionally run the paragraphs together as one flowing letter
  • A4, Letter or A5 output with an adjustable margin

How to use the PDF to Handwriting

  1. Drop the PDF onto the page
  2. Choose which pages to rewrite
  3. Pick the hand, the paper and the ink
  4. Adjust the untidiness until it looks right, then download

Example

Input

lecture-notes.pdf — pages 2-4, looped cursive on exercise-book paper

Output

6 written pages in blue ink with a red margin rule.

Untidiness at 55% gives an even but clearly hand-written line.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • No text could be read from the PDF. — It is a scan, so the pages are pictures of words. Run it through text recognition first and the words become available.
  • The handwriting looks like an ordinary font. — None of the named handwriting faces is installed on this device, so the browser fell back to something plain. Try a different hand, or open the page on another device.
  • The tables and diagrams are missing. — Only the words are rewritten. A handwritten page cannot reproduce a table layout, so the structure is dropped rather than mangled.
  • It runs to far more pages than the original. — Handwriting is much larger than print. Reduce the text size and the line spacing to fit more on a sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the letterforms come from?
From a handwriting typeface installed on your device, so the exact hand differs slightly between a Mac, a Windows PC and a phone. The spacing, slant and baseline wobble are drawn here and look the same everywhere.
Will the same document always look identical?
Yes. The wobble comes from a generator seeded by the text itself, so the same words with the same settings produce the same page every time.
Can this pass as genuinely handwritten?
Close up, no — the letterforms repeat exactly, which real handwriting never does. It reads as handwritten at a glance and as a font on inspection.
Does the layout of the original survive?
No. Headings, columns, tables and images are all dropped; what comes across is the running text, in order.
What page sizes can I write onto?
A4, Letter or A5, in portrait, with the margin under your control. Ruled paper draws its lines to match whatever line spacing you have set.
