About PDF Read Aloud
Reading with your eyes is not always the option: you might be walking, driving, cooking, resting them, or simply working through a document too long to sit with. This tool extracts the text from a PDF and hands it to your device's own speech engine, one passage at a time so nothing gets cut off mid-sentence the way a single long utterance does. The transcript stays on screen with the current passage highlighted, and every passage is clickable, so you can skip the front matter, jump back to something you missed, or start halfway through a chapter. Voice, speed and pitch are all yours to set.

Common errors & troubleshooting
- Nothing is read out. — Either the browser has no speech engine available, or the PDF has no text layer. Both are reported on screen — a scan needs text recognition first.
- The voice list is empty or very short. — Voices are installed by the operating system, not by this page. Add more in your system's speech or accessibility settings and reload.
- Playback stops partway through a long document. — Some browsers stop speech when the tab is hidden. Keep the tab in the foreground, or click the passage where it stopped to resume.
- Headers and page numbers are read out. — Running heads are ordinary text in the PDF. Skip those passages by clicking the next one, or crop the margins before loading.
Frequently asked questions
- Which speech engine reads the document?
- Your device's own, the same one that powers system read-aloud. That is why the voice list differs between a Mac, a Windows PC and a phone.
- Is my PDF uploaded to be narrated?
- No. The text is extracted in this tab and handed straight to the local speech engine, so nothing about the document is transmitted.
- Can I save the narration as an audio file?
- Not from here — browsers speak through the system rather than handing back an audio stream. The extracted text is downloadable if you want to feed it elsewhere.
- Does it read tables and figures sensibly?
- Tables are read row by row, which works for simple ones and poorly for dense grids. Figures hold no text and are skipped entirely.
- What reading speed should I use?
- Most people settle between 1.2× and 1.5× once they are used to a voice. Start at normal speed with an unfamiliar accent.
