Scanning a book gives you spreads: two pages of the book on one sheet of the PDF, which reads badly on a phone and prints wrongly on anything. Cutting each sheet in half fixes it, and the only real difficulty is the fold — a word sitting across the gutter gets sliced in two by a straight cut. The overlap control keeps a sliver of the other side on each half so that word survives on at least one of them. The halves are made by cropping rather than by cutting, so nothing is thrown away and a wider overlap can recover it later.
Features
Cut down the middle for spreads, or across it for two-up sheets
Adjustable overlap so a word on the fold is not sliced away
Right-to-left ordering for books read that way
Halves are made by cropping, so no content is discarded
Preview showing exactly where the cut falls
Page order is preserved: every sheet becomes two consecutive pages
How to use the Split PDF Pages in Half
Drop the scanned PDF onto the page
Choose whether to cut down the middle or across it
scanned-novel-halves.pdf — 296 pages in reading order.
The overlap keeps hyphenated words across the gutter readable on both halves.
Common errors & troubleshooting
The cut is not exactly on the fold. — The cut is at the geometric middle of the sheet, which is right only if the book was scanned squarely. Crop the pages first to centre the spread, then split.
The halves came out in the wrong order. — The book reads right to left. Turn on "Right-hand page first" and the halves swap.
Text is missing at the inside edge. — Raise the overlap. Nothing was deleted — the halves are crops of the full sheet, so widening the overlap brings the content back.
The file size did not go down. — Cropping hides content rather than removing it, so both halves still reference the whole sheet. Flatten or compress afterwards if the size matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is the content actually cut, or just hidden?
Just hidden. Each half is the whole sheet with a crop box applied, which is why the overlap can be widened after the fact without rescanning and why nothing is ever lost.
How much overlap should I use?
Zero for a wide gutter with clear margins. One or two per cent for a tightly bound book where text runs close to the fold. More than about five per cent starts to duplicate visible content.
Will the result print correctly?
Yes. Each half becomes a page at half the sheet size, so an A3 spread becomes two A4 pages that print at their intended scale.
Can I split into three or four instead of two?
No — this cuts once, down or across the middle. For multiple cuts, crop the pages you need with Crop PDF.
What about the horizontal cut?
It is for sheets printed two-up, where two portrait pages sit above one another. The top half comes out first, matching reading order.
