A fillable PDF keeps its answers in field objects rather than in the page, which is why a form can look empty to a text extractor and why some readers refuse to let you type into one at all. This reads the fields directly and gives each one the right control: a text box for text, a switch for a checkbox, and a dropdown listing the form's own permitted values, so an answer that would be rejected is caught before it is written. Answers can be saved as a small JSON file and loaded back into the same form next year, or generated by a script for a batch of forms.
Features
Every field becomes the right kind of control, including dropdowns with their real options
A value that is not one of a field's choices is refused with an explanation, not a crash
Required fields still blank are flagged before you download
Read-only, button and signature fields are shown but left untouched
Filter a long form by field name
Flatten on the way out so the answers cannot be changed
Save and reload answers as JSON for the same form next time
How to use the Fill PDF Form
Drop the fillable PDF onto the page
Type or choose an answer for each field
Check the required-field warning if one appears
Decide whether to flatten, then download the completed form
application-completed.pdf — three fields written, form flattened.
Saved answers are a plain name-to-value object, so a script can produce them.
Common errors & troubleshooting
The PDF has no fields at all. — It is not a fillable form — the boxes are drawn on the page. Use Edit PDF Text to type over it, or Sign PDF to write on it.
A dropdown will not take the value I typed. — A choice field can only hold one of its own options. Pick from the list; the tool shows the first few permitted values in the message.
Some fields are greyed out. — They are marked read-only in the form itself, usually calculated totals or a locked reference number. They are left exactly as the author set them.
The recipient says the form arrived empty. — Some readers do not render field values until they are flattened. Turn on flattening before downloading and the answers become part of the page.
Frequently asked questions
What does flattening a form actually do?
It writes each answer into the page as ordinary content and removes the field. The result looks identical but can no longer be edited or re-filled, which is what you want when sending a completed form and not what you want for a draft.
Can I fill the same form for twenty different people?
Yes. Fill it once, save the answers, then edit the JSON for each person and load it back. The field names stay the same, so only the values change.
Why does a signature field stay blank?
A signature field holds a cryptographic signature rather than a value, and creating one needs a certificate issued to you. Use Sign PDF to place a drawn signature instead.
Are checkbox values always "on"?
Not in the file, but that is the value used here. Forms use their own export values internally, and the tool maps a ticked switch onto whichever one the field expects.
Does filling a form keep it fillable?
Yes, unless you flatten it. Without flattening the answers go into the fields and the recipient can still change them.
