There are two different jobs people call "getting the images out of a PDF". One is a picture of each page, flattened, which is what PDF to Images produces. The other is the photographs and logos the author actually placed, at whatever resolution they supplied — and that is this. Each page is scanned for image objects, identical ones are grouped so a logo repeated on forty pages is one file rather than forty, and the bullet glyphs and single-pixel spacers that are technically images are filtered out. Every picture shows its pixel size, megapixels and how many times it appears.
Features
Finds the images placed in the document, not a flattened picture of each page
Identical images are grouped, with a count of how many times each appears
Tiny spacers, rules and bullet glyphs are filtered out by default
Pixel dimensions, megapixels and file size shown for every picture
Order by page, by largest or by smallest
Save one image, or all of them as a ZIP named by page and size
Transparency is preserved and shown against a checkerboard
How to use the Extract Images from PDF
Drop the PDF onto the page
Wait while each page is scanned for image objects
Reorder or turn the tiny-image filter off if something is missing
Save a single picture, or take the whole set as a ZIP
Example
Input
annual-report.pdf — 84 pages
Output
11 unique images, placed 96 times · largest 2400 × 1600 · saved as report-images.zip
The company logo appeared on 78 pages and comes out once.
Common errors & troubleshooting
Nothing was found in a scanned document. — A scan holds one full-page picture per sheet, which the filter treats as the page rather than an embedded image. Use PDF to Images for those.
An image comes out smaller than it looks on the page. — The PDF stores whatever resolution the author put in. A picture scaled up on the page is still stored at its original pixel size, and nothing can recover detail that was discarded.
A chart or diagram was not extracted. — Vector artwork is drawn with shapes and lines, not stored as a bitmap, so there is no image object to pull out. Render the page instead.
A picture appears with odd colours. — Some PDFs store images in colour spaces a browser cannot reproduce exactly. The shape and detail are correct even when a tint is off.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between this and PDF to Images?
PDF to Images renders each page as a picture, including the text and the layout. This pulls out only the photographs and logos the author embedded, without the page around them.
Why do some images show a "used 12 times" note?
Because the same picture is placed on twelve pages. It is stored once in the file, so it is extracted once, and the count tells you where it came from.
Can I get the images at a higher resolution?
No, and neither can anything else. The resolution in the file is all there is; a document made from a 400-pixel-wide photograph contains a 400-pixel-wide photograph.
Are the images saved as JPEG or PNG?
PNG, so nothing is re-compressed and transparency survives. That can make a photograph larger than it was inside the PDF.
Why are small images hidden by default?
Because a typical document contains dozens of them — bullet points, hairlines, spacer pixels — and they bury the pictures you actually wanted. Turn the filter off to see everything.
