About Remove Images from PDF

Deleting a picture from a PDF is the obvious approach, and it breaks the file: the page still says “draw the image called Im3 here”, the object it names has gone, and a strict reader refuses the whole page rather than part of it. So every chosen picture is replaced where it stands by a single pixel instead — a stencil that paints nothing at all, or one light grey pixel that the page's own transform stretches across the box the photograph filled. The drawing instructions are never edited, every reference stays valid, and the layout survives with holes where the pictures were. Each one is listed with its pixel size, its compression, the pages that use it and how much of the file it takes, so the logo can stay while the eight-megapixel hero shot goes.

Features

  • Every picture listed with pixel size, compression, the pages using it and its share of the file
  • Keep small images below 64 px, 200 px or a size you set, so logos and icons survive
  • Tick or untick any single picture to override the size rule
  • Leave a blank space where a picture was, or a light grey box
  • Transparency masks are never removed on their own
  • Text, vector drawings and the page layout are left exactly as they were
  • A picture on a hidden layer keeps its layer, so it does not turn into a visible box
  • A warning when the document is a scan, where each page is itself one big picture

How to use the Remove Images from PDF

  1. Drop the PDF in and look at what it actually contains
  2. Set the size below which pictures are kept, and override individual ones
  3. Choose a blank space or a grey box for the gaps
  4. Remove them and save the lighter copy

Example

Input

brochure.pdf — 24 pages, 63 pictures, 14.2 MB

Output

brochure-no-images.pdf — 58 pictures replaced, 5 logos kept, 1.3 MB · 91% smaller

Every page keeps its layout; only the pixels have gone.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • Every page came out blank. — The document is a scan, so each page is one full-page picture and removing the pictures removes the pages' entire contents. Compress PDF is what makes a scan smaller.
  • One picture is still on the page. — It was written straight into the page's drawing instructions rather than stored as an object of its own. Inline images like that are rare and usually tiny, and they are left alone here.
  • A chart vanished from the list but never from the page. — Vector charts are drawn with lines, curves and fills rather than stored as a bitmap, so there was no picture to remove. They are not listed and not affected.
  • A signature or stamp image disappeared as well. — Pictures painted by an annotation rather than by the page are removed with the rest by default. They are listed and marked “in a stamp or signature”, so untick the ones that should stay.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the pictures replaced rather than deleted outright?
Because a page names the images it paints. Delete the object and the instruction points at nothing, which some readers treat as a broken page. A one-pixel stand-in keeps every reference valid while the pixels themselves are gone.
Will the pages keep their layout once the pictures have gone?
Yes, exactly. The stand-in is stretched by the same transform the original picture was, so the space a photograph occupied stays the same size and nothing reflows. Text and vector artwork are untouched.
Can I keep the company logo and drop everything else?
That is what the size threshold is for: anything whose longer side is under the limit is kept, which catches logos, icons and bullet glyphs. Individual pictures can be ticked or unticked to override it either way.
What happens to a photograph that is used on twenty pages?
It is stored once in the file and drawn twenty times, so it is replaced once and disappears from all twenty pages at the same moment. The list shows every page that uses it.
How much smaller will the file get?
As much as the pictures were worth — often nine tenths of a brochure, almost nothing in a text report. The list totals the image data up front, and the result tells you the before and after sizes.
