Meme Generator

Add classic outlined captions to your own picture, or to a blank canvas, then move, restyle and download the result — everything is drawn in your browser.

Your picture is decoded and drawn on a canvas in this tab, and the finished image is made on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and photo details such as location are not carried into the download.

About Meme Generator

The Meme Generator puts captions on a picture you already have. Drop in a photo, paste one from the clipboard, or start from a blank square or banner. Two text boxes appear in the classic style: Impact, white letters, a black outline, capitals, and a size that fits the box automatically. Press a box to select it, drag it, pull its corner to resize it, or nudge it with the arrow keys, and add more boxes, up to twelve, for text anywhere on the image. Each box has its own font, size, colours, outline width, shadow and alignment. Sizes are stored relative to the picture's width, so the download is drawn at the picture's own resolution, up to 4096 px, and matches the preview exactly. No meme templates are bundled, so you choose the picture.

  • PNG or JPEG download, or copy the image straight to the clipboard where supported
  • Exports at the picture's own resolution, up to 4096 px on the long side

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The text is hard to read on a busy photo. — Keep the fill white and make the outline thicker with the Outline width slider. A darker outline colour or the Shadow switch separates the letters from detailed backgrounds.
  • The caption looks thin and is not in Impact. — Impact comes with most Windows and Mac computers but not every phone or Linux system, which then falls back to a similar bold font. Choose Arial Black for a heavy look that is available more widely.
  • The text does not fill its box. — Auto-fit stops at the Largest size setting. Raise that slider, make the box smaller so the text fills it, or turn auto-fit off and set the size by hand.
  • The download is smaller than the original photo. — Downloads are capped at 4096 px on the longest side to stay within what browsers can draw. A larger picture is scaled down to that, keeping its shape, and the text matches the preview.

Frequently asked questions

Why do image memes use the Impact font?
Impact is a heavy, condensed sans-serif that has long shipped with Windows and Mac computers. Its tall, narrow capitals stay legible at small sizes, and with a black outline around white letters it reads on almost any picture, which made it the default look for caption memes.
How do I make meme text readable on any photo?
Use a light fill with a dark outline, or the reverse, and widen the outline until the letters separate from the background. The outline width is a share of the text size, so it grows with the caption. A soft shadow can add contrast on photos with lots of fine detail.
Can I use my own template with the Meme Generator?
Yes, that is the intended way. The tool bundles no meme templates, so any picture you drop in or paste becomes the template. Use pictures you own or have permission to use, or start from one of the blank canvases.
What resolution does the Meme Generator export?
It exports at the picture's own size, scaled down only when the longest side would exceed 4096 px. Blank canvases export at 1080 by 1080 or 1200 by 630. Text sizes are stored as a share of the width, so the file looks like the preview, just sharper.
How do I add text anywhere on the picture, not just top and bottom?
Press Add text for a new box, then drag it where you want it and pull its corner to change its size. Each box has its own wording, font, colours and alignment, and you can add up to twelve. Selecting a box on the picture or in the list shows its settings.
Should I copy the meme to the clipboard or download it?
Copy image is quickest for pasting into a chat or document, and it appears only in browsers that allow images on the clipboard. Download gives you a file to keep or upload. Both are drawn the same way, and the clipboard copy is always a PNG.
