GIF Maker Online

Turn a set of pictures into an animated GIF with the order, timing, size, colours and looping you choose — built in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

Pictures are decoded, laid out and compressed in this tab, and the finished GIF is a file made on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

About GIF Maker

The GIF Maker assembles pictures into an animation you can drop into a chat, a README or an email. Add images by dragging, choosing several at once or pasting, then slide them into order in the frame strip. Every frame can keep the shared delay or carry its own, and the output width keeps the shape of the first picture while the others are fitted inside without stretching. Choose how many times it plays, how many colours it may use, whether to dither, and whether to play it backwards or there and back. A live preview runs at the real frame timing before anything is encoded. The GIF itself is built from one shared colour palette, compressed frame by frame, and offered for download with its size, frame count and length.

Features

  • Add pictures by dragging, choosing several at once or pasting, and reorder, duplicate or remove frames
  • A shared delay in milliseconds or frames per second, plus a per-frame override
  • Output width up to 1000 px with the aspect ratio taken from the first frame
  • Loop forever or a set number of times, with Reverse order and Ping-pong
  • 256, 128, 64 or 32 colours with optional dithering to hide banding
  • Background colour or a transparent GIF for pictures with see-through areas
  • A live preview that plays at the real delays before you create the file
  • An animated GIF dropped in is opened frame by frame so you can retime or reverse it

How to use the GIF Maker

  1. Drop or paste your pictures, then put the frames in the order you want with the arrow buttons
  2. Set the delay or frames per second, the output width, the looping and the number of colours
  3. Watch the preview, adjust any single frame's delay, then press Create GIF
  4. Check the size and frame count, then download the finished .gif

Example

Input

6 pictures · 480 px wide · 100 ms a frame · loop forever · 256 colours with dithering

Output

6 frames · 480×320 · 100 ms · loop forever → 842 KB

A typical slideshow GIF: six photographs, a tenth of a second each, repeating forever.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The GIF is much bigger than expected. — Size grows with width, height and frame count. Choose a narrower output, switch to 128 or 64 colours, turn dithering off, or use fewer frames. Photographs are the worst case; flat artwork compresses far better.
  • Colours look banded or speckled. — A GIF holds at most 256 colours. Turn dithering on for smoother gradients at the cost of a larger file, or turn it off for clean flat areas and a smaller file.
  • The animation runs slower than the delay you set. — GIF stores time in hundredths of a second, and browsers play any frame shorter than 20 ms at 100 ms. Use 20 ms or more, which is about 50 frames per second at most.
  • Some frames have empty bars around them. — Pictures with a different shape from the first frame are fitted inside it without stretching, so the leftover area shows the background colour. Put the picture with the shape you want first, or crop the others to match.

Frequently asked questions

How many colours can a GIF use, and what does that mean for photos?
A GIF palette holds at most 256 colours, shared by every frame here. A photograph has thousands of shades, so smooth skies and skin can show banding or a grainy dither. Logos, screenshots and drawings with flat colours look almost unchanged.
How can I shrink a GIF made with the GIF Maker?
The biggest savings come from a narrower width, then fewer frames, then fewer colours. Switching dithering off also helps because dithered dots compress poorly. The tool shows the final size and warns when a result will be over about 10 MB.
What is the difference between frame delay and FPS in the GIF Maker?
They describe the same thing two ways. A delay of 100 ms equals 10 frames per second, and 40 ms equals 25. Use whichever you find easier; the other is shown beside it. A single frame can override the shared delay when it needs to linger.
How do the GIF loop settings work, and how do I play it only once?
Loop forever repeats until the page is closed. Play N times stops after that many plays, and 1 writes a GIF with no repeat instruction so it plays once and stops on the last frame. Reverse order and Ping-pong change the sequence the frames play in.
Can the GIF Maker make a transparent GIF?
Yes. Switch on Transparent and any pixel that is mostly see-through in your picture stays see-through in the GIF. GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so soft edges are cut to a hard edge, and one palette slot is set aside for it.
Should I make a GIF or a video from my pictures?
A GIF plays everywhere without a player, but it is large and limited to 256 colours. For a clip with lots of motion or a long runtime, a video is far smaller. If you already have a video, the Video to GIF tool cuts a section out of it.
