Random Team Generator

Paste a list of names and split it into fair random teams by team count or team size, with optional skill ratings, keep-together and keep-apart rules. Everything runs in your browser.

Your names, ratings and rules are processed on your device only. Nothing you paste is uploaded, and the last list is kept in your browser until you clear it.

About Random Team Generator

The Random Team Generator turns a pasted list of names into teams you can use straight away. Choose how many teams you want or how many people go on each one, and decide whether leftover people join existing teams or form one smaller team. Add a rating after any name, such as Ana, 7, and the tool balances the average skill across teams instead of dealing blindly. Write Ana+Ben to keep two people together or Ana!Ben to keep them apart; when a rule cannot be met it says so rather than quietly breaking it. A seed makes every split reproducible, and Re-shuffle gives a new one. Teams can be named after animals, colours or Greek letters, then copied, printed as cards or exported as CSV. Your names stay on your device.

Features

  • Split by number of teams or by people per team, with leftover people spread out or placed on one smaller team
  • Optional skill ratings, written as Name, 7, with balanced teams by average rating
  • Keep-together and keep-apart rules with a clear notice when one cannot be satisfied
  • Unbiased shuffle for plain splits, so every person has the same chance of landing on any team
  • Seeded results: keep the seed to reproduce a split, or Re-shuffle for a different one
  • Team names from animals, colours, Greek letters or simple numbering
  • Copy as text, download CSV, or print team cards
  • Names are cleaned up: blanks removed, duplicates optionally dropped, commas and tabs accepted

How to use the Random Team Generator

  1. Paste your names into the box, one per line, adding a rating after a name if you want balanced teams
  2. Pick Number of teams or People per team and type the number
  3. Optionally add keep-together or keep-apart rules and choose a team name style
  4. Check the teams and any notices, then press Re-shuffle until you like the split
  5. Copy the teams, download the CSV or print the cards

Example

Input

Ada, 9
Grace, 8
Alan, 8
Katherine, 7
Linus, 6
Barbara, 6
Ada+Linus
Grace!Alan
2 teams

Output

Tigers (3): Ada 9, Linus 6, Alan 8 — avg 7.67
Wolves (3): Grace 8, Katherine 7, Barbara 6 — avg 7
Average rating per team: 7 to 7.67 (gap 0.67)

Ada and Linus stay together, Grace and Alan are split, and 0.67 is the smallest gap those rules allow.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • A rule such as Ana+Ben is ignored. — Both names must match entries in the list, ignoring upper and lower case. Names mentioned in a rule but missing from the list are reported in a notice and the rule is skipped.
  • Teams are not exactly the same size. — When people do not divide evenly, sizes differ by one. With People per team, choose Make one extra smaller team if you prefer full teams plus one short team.
  • A name with a comma in it was split in two. — Commas, semicolons and tabs separate names. Put each full name on its own line without a comma, for example Ada Lovelace instead of Lovelace, Ada.
  • The notice says a rule could not be satisfied. — Some rules conflict with the team sizes, for example four people who must all be apart across three teams. Try another seed, change the number of teams, or relax a rule.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Random Team Generator balance teams by skill rating?
It starts from several random deals and keeps swapping players of equal group size between teams whenever a swap brings each team's total rating closer to its fair share. The best result wins, so average ratings come out very close, and different seeds still give different line-ups.
How do I write ratings in the Random Team Generator?
Put a number after the name on the same line, separated by a comma or tab, such as Ana, 7. People without a rating are treated as average, so you can rate only some of the list.
Can the team generator keep two people on the same team or apart?
Yes. Write Ana+Ben on its own line to keep them together, or Ana!Ben to keep them apart. Chains like Ana+Ben+Cy work too. If a rule cannot be satisfied, the tool lists exactly which one instead of hiding it.
Will the same names always make the same teams in the team picker?
Only if the seed, settings and list are unchanged. The seed box shows the value used for the current split, so you can copy it and type it back in later to get the identical teams. Press Re-shuffle to draw a fresh seed.
What happens to leftover people when the team picker cannot divide evenly?
With a fixed number of teams, sizes differ by at most one. With a fixed team size you choose: add the extra people to existing teams, or place them on one extra smaller team at the end.
Are the names I paste into the team maker saved or shared?
The list is processed in your browser and is not sent to ArrayKit. The page keeps your last list and settings on your device so it is there when you return, and Clear removes the list.
