Coin Flip Online

Flip one coin or up to a hundred at once with a 3D animation, running totals and streaks. Each result comes from your browser's cryptographic random number generator.

Every flip is generated and counted in your browser. The labels you type and your flip history are never sent anywhere, and only the labels, coin count and sound setting are kept on your device.

About Coin Flip

The Coin Flip tool settles a decision in one press. A large coin spins in 3D and lands on heads or tails; press the button or tap the space bar to flip again. Raise the count to throw up to 100 coins at once and see the split, or rename the sides so the coin reads Pizza and Tacos instead. Totals, percentages, your current streak and your longest streak build up as you go, with a strip showing every recent flip. A separate panel works out, with exact binomial maths, how often a fair coin would be as lopsided or produce a streak that long, so you can tell luck from something odd. The outcome of every flip is drawn first, from your browser's cryptographic random number generator, and the animation is only decoration. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Features

  • 3D spinning coin with a toss arc, switched to an instant result if your device asks for reduced motion
  • Flip 1 to 100 coins at once, with a summary of the heads and tails split
  • Rename heads and tails to anything, such as Pizza and Tacos, and the choice is remembered
  • Running totals with percentages, current streak and longest streak
  • Exact odds for how lopsided your split is and how likely a streak that long would be
  • History strip of recent flips, oldest first, with the latest highlighted
  • Space bar shortcut, optional coin sound and one-click copy of the result
  • Each flip decided by your browser's cryptographic random number generator before the animation starts

How to use the Coin Flip

  1. Choose how many coins to flip, from 1 to 100, using the box or a quick preset
  2. Optionally rename heads and tails to your two options
  3. Press Flip the coin or tap the space bar and wait for it to land
  4. Read the result, then keep flipping to build totals and streaks
  5. Use Copy result to paste the outcome, or Reset to start the totals again

Example

Input

Labels: Pizza / Tacos
Coins: 5

Output

3 Pizza · 2 Tacos
Running totals: 8 flips: 5 Pizza (62.5%), 3 Tacos (37.5%)
Longest streak: 3 of Pizza

A 5 to 3 split is ordinary: a fair coin is at least that lopsided about 73% of the time.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The coin keeps landing on the same side. — Streaks are normal in random data. In 100 fair flips a run of 6 or 7 identical results is more likely than not, and the next flip is still an even 50/50.
  • Pressing the space bar does nothing. — The shortcut is ignored while a text box, button or link has focus. Click an empty part of the page, then press the space bar again.
  • The coin does not spin and the result appears at once. — Your device is set to reduce motion, and the tool follows that setting. The result is still a genuine random flip.
  • The totals disappeared. — Totals and history only live while the page is open and are cleared by Reset or a reload. Your labels, coin count and sound choice are remembered on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is the online Coin Flip really 50/50?
Yes. Each coin is decided by comparing a uniformly distributed random number from your browser's cryptographic generator with one half, so heads and tails are exactly equally likely and every coin is independent of the last. Over a small number of flips the split can look uneven, which is normal.
Does the coin animation decide the Coin Flip result?
No. The outcome is chosen before the coin starts to move, and the animation is then set to end on that face. The spin is decoration, so changing how fast it plays or skipping it with reduced motion has no effect on the odds.
How many coins can I flip at once with this coin toss?
Anywhere from 1 to 100. With more than one coin you get a grid of coins and a summary of how many landed on each side, and every coin also feeds the running totals and streaks.
What does the how unusual is this panel in Coin Flip calculate?
It uses exact binomial probability for a fair coin. For the split, it adds up the chance of being at least as lopsided in either direction. For the streak, it works out the chance that a run of your longest length appears anywhere in the flips so far.
Why does a long streak not make the opposite side due?
A coin has no memory. After seven heads the chance of heads on the next flip is still one half. Long streaks happen simply because there are many places in a long sequence where one could start.
Can I use the Coin Flip to choose between two options other than heads or tails?
Yes. Type your own labels, such as Pizza and Tacos or Me and You, into the two label boxes. The coin faces, the result and the history strip all use your words, and the labels are remembered on your device.
