Spin the Wheel – Random Name Picker

Type your names or options, press SPIN and the wheel picks a winner at random, with optional weights, sound and a history of results. The draw happens in your browser and your list is never uploaded.

Your entries stay in this browser, and a shared link carries the list in the address itself rather than on any server. The winner is drawn on your device with your browser's cryptographic random numbers.

About Spin the Wheel

Spin the Wheel turns a list into a wheel and lets chance choose. Type one entry per line, up to 200, and end a line with x3, ×3 or *3 to give that wedge three times the space and three times the chance. The winner is drawn from your browser's cryptographic random number generator and decided before the wheel moves. The spin, which lasts 2 to 12 seconds and slows to a stop with a tick for every wedge, only plays that result back, so the pointer always finishes inside the wedge that was chosen and never on a line. The result window can spin again or take the winner off the wheel, which suits raffles and classroom turns, and the last 20 results are counted. Everything runs on your device.

Features

  • Up to 200 entries, one per line, with blank lines ignored and duplicate names allowed
  • Weights from 1 to 100 written as x3, ×3 or *3, drawn as proportionally bigger wedges
  • The winner is picked first with cryptographic random numbers, so the animation cannot change the outcome
  • Spin time from 2 to 12 seconds with a smooth slow-down, a tick for every wedge and a chime for the winner
  • Six colour themes (Vivid, Pastel, Ocean, Sunset, Mono and Rainbow) that stay readable in light and dark mode
  • A result window with Spin again and Remove winner, plus an option to remove each winner automatically
  • A history of the last 20 results with a count per name, such as Pizza ×3
  • Shuffle, Sort A–Z, a full screen mode for classrooms and a link that carries the wheel in the address

How to use the Spin the Wheel

  1. Type or paste your entries, one per line, and add x3 after a name to give it a bigger wedge
  2. Choose a colour theme and a spin time, and switch the sound on or off
  3. Press SPIN or tap the wheel, or focus the button and press Space or Enter
  4. Read the winner in the result window, then spin again, remove the winner or close it
  5. Press Copy link to share the wheel, or Full screen to show it on a projector

Example

Input

Ana
Ben
Chloe x2

Output

Wheel: Ana 25%, Ben 25%, Chloe 50%
Spin (5 s): the pointer stops inside Chloe's wedge
Result window: Chloe · 50% of the wheel
History: Chloe ×1

The winner is drawn before the wheel starts to move and the animation only plays it back, so a wedge twice as wide really is twice as likely.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The SPIN button is greyed out. — The wheel needs at least two entries. Add one name per line in the box; blank lines do not count.
  • A line such as Pizza x0 or Pizza x101 shows up on the wheel with the x on the end. — A weight must be a whole number from 1 to 100. Anything else is read as part of the name, so write Pizza x3 to get a bigger wedge.
  • The wheel makes no sound. — Check that the Sound button is on and the device volume is up. Browsers only start audio after a tap or click, so the first sound comes with your first press of SPIN.
  • Some names are missing from the wheel, or the last lines of my list are ignored. — The wheel uses the first 200 lines. With well over a hundred entries, or very thin weighted wedges, names are too small to print, but the winner still appears in full in the result window. Full screen gives the wheel more room.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spin the Wheel picker fair, and how is the winner chosen?
Yes. The winner is drawn by weight with your browser's cryptographic random number generator before the wheel starts to turn. The animation then plays back a stopping angle that was worked out to sit inside that winner's wedge, between 10 and 90 percent of the way across it, so the wheel never rests on a line and nothing about the spin can change who wins.
How do I give some entries a bigger chance on the wheel?
End the line with a weight, such as Pizza x3, Pizza ×3 or Pizza *3. That wedge becomes three times as wide and three times as likely, because the winner is drawn in proportion to weight. Weights run from 1 to 100, and the result window shows the winner's share of the wheel, for example 50% of the wheel.
How do I take the winner off the wheel and keep spinning for a raffle?
Press Remove winner in the result window and that line leaves your list, or switch on Remove the winner automatically and each winner leaves when you close the result. Spin again carries on with whoever is left, so every name gets one turn. The history keeps a count of everyone who has come up.
How many entries can the Spin the Wheel hold?
Up to 200 lines, and each name is cut off after 120 characters. With well over a hundred entries the names become too small to print on the wheel itself, though the spin still works and the winner is shown in full in the result window. Full screen gives the wheel more room.
Can I save or share a wheel from this page?
Your entries, theme, sound setting and spin time are remembered in this browser. Copy link puts the entries and colour theme into the address after the # sign, so anyone who opens that link sees the same wheel. The list travels inside the link itself and nothing is stored on a server. A very long list can be too big for a link.
Does the Spin the Wheel work on a phone or a classroom projector?
Yes. The wheel scales to the screen and you can tap it to spin. Full screen fills a projector or smart board with the wheel and the result window, and appears wherever the browser allows it. Sound starts with your first tap, because browsers only allow audio after a touch.
