About Word to PDF
A .docx file is a ZIP archive of XML, and the structure you applied in Word — Heading 2, a bulleted list, a three-column table — is written into it explicitly. This converter reads that structure rather than trying to photograph the page. Heading styles become sized headings, list paragraphs keep their bullet and their indent level, tables are rebuilt with borders and a shaded first row, quote styles are italicised with a rule, and an explicit page break stays a page break. Before you convert, the tool shows you what it found, block by block, so there is no guessing about what will be in the file.
Features
- Reads the .docx package directly — no conversion service involved
- Heading 1 to 4, Title and Subtitle styles map to sized headings
- Numbered and bulleted list paragraphs keep their indent level
- Tables rebuilt with borders and a shaded header row
- Explicit page breaks are preserved
- A block-by-block preview of what was found before you convert
- Serif typography by default, with page size and margins under your control
How to use the Word to PDF
- Drop the .docx file onto the page
- Scan the structure list to confirm the headings and tables were found
- Choose page size, margins, typeface and whether to number the pages
- Convert and download the PDF
Example
Input
policy.docx — 6 headings, 42 paragraphs, 2 tables
Output
An A4 PDF with matching heading levels, both tables redrawn with borders, and numbered pages.
The structure list is read from the document's own styles, so it matches what Word's navigation pane shows.
Common errors & troubleshooting
- The file is refused as an older .doc. — The binary .doc format from Word 2003 and earlier is a different container entirely. Open it in Word and save as .docx, then convert.
- The PDF does not match Word's page layout. — Line and page breaks are recalculated for the page size you choose here, so text reflows. Headings, lists and tables are preserved; exact pagination is not.
- Images from the document are missing. — Only the text structure is converted. Embedded pictures stay in the .docx package and are not drawn into the PDF.
- Headings came out as ordinary paragraphs. — The document uses direct formatting — bigger, bold text — rather than heading styles. Apply real Heading styles in Word and the levels come through.
Frequently asked questions
- Does my Word document get uploaded during the conversion?
- No. The .docx package is unpacked and read in this tab, so contracts, HR letters and drafts stay on your machine.
- Are tracked changes and comments included?
- No. The converter reads the accepted document text, so tracked insertions appear as text and comments are left out entirely.
- Will the fonts match the original document?
- The PDF uses one of the standard PDF typefaces rather than embedding the Word font. That keeps the file small and universally readable, at the cost of an exact type match.
- Can I convert several documents into a single PDF?
- Convert each one and then merge the results, which also lets you set the order and add a cover page.
- What happens to headers and footers from the Word file?
- They live in separate parts of the package and are not read. Add a running header and footer to the PDF afterwards if you need one.
