About Number Memory Test

The Number Memory Test shows you a single digit, hides it after a moment and asks you to type it back. Get it right and the next number has one more digit; get it wrong and the game ends. The time on screen grows with the length — a second plus half a second per digit — and a pace setting makes it more relaxed or quicker. A progress bar shows how long is left, and a button lets you move on early once you have it. When you slip, the page lines up the real number against your answer digit by digit, marking correct, wrong and missing digits, so you can see whether you lost the middle or the tail. Numbers never start with zero unless you allow it. Everything is generated and checked on your device, and your best score stays in this browser.

Example

Input

Level 7 number: 4821739
You typed: 4821793

Output

The number was 4 8 2 1 7 3 9
You typed 4 8 2 1 7 9 3
Recalled 6 digits · 5 of 7 in the right place

The comparison is position by position, so a swapped pair shows as two wrong digits.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • My answer was marked wrong although all the digits were right. — Check the order and the length. Digits are compared position by position, and a number that is one digit too short or too long is wrong.
  • The number stays on screen for too short a time. — Switch the display time from Standard or Quick to Relaxed before you start. Each digit then gets about 50 percent more viewing time.
  • The answer box ignores letters and spaces. — Only digits are accepted. Anything else, including spaces you add for readability, is removed automatically as you type.
  • Pressing Enter did nothing. — An empty answer is ignored on purpose so a stray key cannot end the game. Type at least one digit, then press Enter.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits can the average person remember in the Number Memory Test?
Most people manage about seven digits, give or take two, which matches the classic findings on short-term memory. Chunking the number into groups of two or three digits, and a quiet environment, often add a few more.
How long does each number stay on screen?
At Standard pace a number is shown for one second plus half a second per digit, so five digits get three and a half seconds. Relaxed multiplies that by one and a half and Quick by seven tenths.
What does the Number Memory Test score mean?
Your score is the longest number you typed back correctly. If you recall six digits and then miss the seven-digit number, your score is six and the result card shows exactly which digits of the seventh went wrong.
Why does the Number Memory Test never start with a zero?
By default the first digit is 1 to 9 so you never have to wonder whether a leading zero counts. If you want the extra challenge, switch on the leading zero option and numbers such as 0482 can appear.
How does the digit comparison work after a wrong answer?
Both numbers are lined up from the left. A digit that matches is marked right, a different digit is marked wrong, a digit you left out is marked missing, and anything typed beyond the real length is marked extra.
Can I play the Number Memory Test with the keyboard only?
Yes. The answer box is focused automatically when the number hides, Enter submits your answer, and Enter on the Next level button starts the next round, so you never need the mouse.
