Typing Speed Test
Type a short passage and get your net WPM, accuracy and consistency with a per-second speed chart, all scored in your browser and nothing you type sent anywhere.
The passage is generated and scored in your browser. What you type goes into an on-page box and is never sent anywhere; only your last 10 results and personal bests are saved, and only in this browser.
This typing test scores you the way typing contests do. Choose a timed test of 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, or a fixed passage of 10 to 100 words, then start typing: the clock begins on your first keystroke, Space moves to the next word and Backspace fixes a slip. Net WPM counts only the words you typed exactly right, five characters to a word with spaces included. Raw WPM counts everything you typed, and accuracy counts every keystroke, including mistakes you later corrected. The result adds consistency, a per-second chart, a rating from Beginner to Elite and a personal best for each setup. Word lists come in English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Russian, with optional punctuation and numbers. The passage is generated and scored on your device, and your results stay in this browser.

Example
Input
Time · 30 s · English · punctuation off
38 words typed in 30 s: 36 exactly right, 2 with a slip

Raw speed 76 WPM · rating Fast
Net WPM credits only the 36 words typed exactly right; raw WPM counts all 38.
Common errors & troubleshooting
My net WPM is far below my raw speed. — A word with even one wrong letter earns no net credit, so a few slips cost more than they look. Ease off the pace slightly and the two figures move together.
Nothing happens when I start typing. — The text needs keyboard focus first. Click the passage or press Tab until it is highlighted, and on a phone tap the text to open the keyboard. The clock only starts once a character arrives.
Every letter is marked wrong. — Check Caps Lock and your keyboard layout. Case matters, accented letters in Spanish, French, German and Portuguese must carry their accents, and the Russian list needs a Russian layout.
Backspace will not go back to the previous word. — That is deliberate: you can step back only into a word you typed wrong. A word typed correctly is locked in, so a good streak cannot be undone by accident.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Typing Speed Test calculate WPM?
It uses the standard rule that five characters, spaces included, make one word. Net WPM is the characters of the words you typed exactly right, plus the spaces after them, divided by five and by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM divides everything you typed instead, so it is always equal to or higher than net.
What counts as an error in this typing test?
Any character that differs from the target at its position: a wrong letter, the wrong case, a missing accent, an extra letter past the end of the word, or letters skipped when you press Space early. A word with any error earns no net WPM, and accuracy counts each wrong keystroke even if you fix it afterwards.
What is a good WPM on the typing test?
Under 30 WPM is rated Beginner, 30 to 44 Average, 45 to 59 Good, 60 to 79 Fast, 80 to 99 Very fast and 100 or more Elite. Everyday typing sits in the middle bands, and steady short practice sessions raise your score more reliably than occasional long ones.
What is the difference between net and raw WPM in this typing test?
Raw WPM is your pace counting every character you typed, mistakes included. Net WPM counts only words typed exactly right, so it reflects speed you can actually use. A large gap between them means errors are costing you; a small gap means you are fast and clean.
Can I practise typing in another language with this typing test?
Yes. Pick English, Español, Deutsch, Français, Português or Русский. Accents and umlauts must be typed exactly, and the Russian list needs a Russian keyboard layout. The German list leaves out nouns, because German capitalises them and every word is shown in lower case.
Does the typing test work on a phone?
Yes. Tap the text to bring up your on-screen keyboard and type as normal. Phone typing is usually slower, and a keyboard's suggestions can alter words, so compare phone scores with other phone scores rather than with a physical keyboard.
