Speaker & Headphone Test Online
Check your left and right speakers or headphones with stereo tones, a frequency sweep, bass steps and pink or white noise, all made in your browser with nothing recorded or sent anywhere.
Every tone and noise is generated on your device by your browser, nothing is recorded or uploaded, and only your sweep settings are remembered in this browser. The volume always starts low.
The Speaker & Headphone Test plays sounds made in your browser so you can hear what your speakers or headphones really do. Play a 440 Hz tone on the left channel, the right channel or both, or let it hop between the sides to catch a dead, quiet or swapped channel. A logarithmic sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz shows a live frequency readout and band name, and a Mark button notes where you hear the tone appear or fade. Seven bass steps from 30 to 120 Hz show how low your speakers reach, and pink or white noise can be sent to either side. The volume starts low, every sound fades in and out, and nothing is uploaded or recorded.
Features
Left, Right and Both buttons that play a 440 Hz tone through one channel only, with true silence on the other side
Alternate mode that hops between the sides eight times, with an option to say each channel aloud
Left and right speaker graphics that glow while their channel sounds
A logarithmic sweep with a live frequency readout, a band name from sub-bass to air, a progress bar and a Mark button
Your own sweep range, a duration of 10, 20 or 30 seconds, a channel choice and presets for bass or high frequencies
Seven bass steps from 30 to 120 Hz that reveal how low your speakers or subwoofer can go
Pink and white noise for the left, right or both channels, looping until you stop it
A 20 percent starting volume, a short fade on every start and stop, a Stop all button and the Esc key
How to use the Speaker & Headphone Test
Turn your system volume down, connect the speakers or headphones to test and choose them as the sound output
Press Left, Right and Both in Channel check and confirm each tone comes from the right side only
Start the frequency sweep, press Mark when the tone appears and again when it fades, then try the bass steps
Play pink noise on Both to judge balance and phase, and press Stop all when you are done
Example
Input
Bluetooth headphones · volume 20%
Channel check: Left, Right, Both, Alternate
Sweep 20 Hz to 20 kHz over 20 s, pressing Mark at each end
Bass steps 30 to 120 Hz
Output
Left: clear · Right: clear · Alternate: swaps every 0.8 s
Sweep: audible from 38 Hz to 16 kHz
Bass: 30 Hz silent · 40 Hz faint · 50 Hz and up clear
Pink noise on Both: centred and full
The two marked frequencies are the edges of what these headphones and your ears reproduce; silence at 30 Hz is normal for headphones and laptops.
Common errors & troubleshooting
One side is silent or much quieter than the other. — Check the balance setting in your system's sound options and the app's own volume, then reseat the cable or reconnect the Bluetooth pair. Try another pair of headphones or speakers to find out whether the fault is in the device or the source.
Left and Right sound the same, or both play in one ear. — A mono-audio accessibility setting, a mono adapter or a headset in call mode is mixing the channels together. Turn off Mono audio in your system's accessibility options, use a stereo cable and reconnect the device.
There is no sound at all. — Check that the tab is not muted, that the volume slider here and your system volume are up, and that the right output device is chosen. On an iPhone or iPad, switch off silent mode. Then press Stop all and start a test again.
The sweep drops out above 8 kHz. — A Bluetooth headset in call mode runs at a low sample rate that cannot carry high tones, and the tool says so when it trims the sweep. Close apps that are using the microphone, reconnect the headphones for music playback and run the sweep again.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell which side is dead when one headphone is silent in the Speaker & Headphone Test?
Press Left, then Right, then Both. If Left is silent while Right plays, that driver or its connection is at fault, and Both will sound one-sided too. If Left and Right both come out of the same side, a balance or mono setting is mixing the channels. Try the headphones on another device to separate a faulty headphone from a faulty source.
Why does the Speaker & Headphone Test sweep sound quiet at the lowest and highest frequencies?
The sweep holds one constant level, but hearing is far less sensitive below about 100 Hz and above about 12 kHz, so the same tone sounds fainter there. Small drivers also cannot move enough air for deep bass, and the top of hearing falls with age. Where the sound fades in and out shows the limits of your equipment and your ears.
Is the frequency sweep in the Speaker Test safe for speakers and ears?
At the starting volume of 20 percent it is gentle, and every sound fades in and out over 35 milliseconds, but any loud tone can harm speakers and hearing. Raise the volume slowly, keep it modest for deep bass and for bright tones above 8 kHz in headphones, and press Stop all or Esc if something buzzes or hurts.
What do the bass steps in the Speaker & Headphone Test reveal?
Each step plays a pure tone at 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 or 120 Hz for two seconds. The lowest step you still hear clean and steady is how far down your speakers reach. A step that turns into a buzz, a rattle or a higher-pitched note means the speaker is distorting, and one that disappears is below its range.
Why do I hear both channels in one ear on the Speaker & Headphone Test?
Something is mixing the left and right signals into mono: a mono-audio accessibility option, a mono adapter or cable, or a Bluetooth headset in call mode. Switch off Mono audio in your system's accessibility settings, use a stereo connection, reconnect the device and run Left and Right again.
How do I test Bluetooth headphones with the Speaker & Headphone Test?
Connect the headphones first and choose them as the system's sound output, then press a test; the tone should play in the headphones and not in the laptop's speakers. A short delay between pressing and hearing is normal over Bluetooth, and the glowing speakers are timed to the delay your browser reports.
