Microphone Test Online

See your microphone level live, watch the waveform and spectrum, and record a short clip to hear how you sound — all in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

The microphone is analysed in this tab only. Audio is recorded just when you press Record, stays in memory on your device, and the microphone is released the moment you press Stop.

About Mic Test

The Mic Test asks your browser for the microphone and then shows exactly what comes in. A live meter reads your level in dBFS, decibels relative to full scale, where 0 is the loudest a signal can be, with a peak-hold marker and a clip lamp that lights if you hit the ceiling. A waveform and a spectrum show the sound itself, and a plain-language verdict updates every second: working, quiet, loud or clipping. You can choose which input to test, switch echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain on or off to hear the raw signal, and see the settings the browser actually applied. A short record-and-playback check lets you hear yourself. The sound is analysed in this tab, and a recording exists only if you press Record.

Features

  • Live level meter in dBFS with peak hold and a clip warning
  • Waveform and frequency spectrum drawn from the microphone in real time
  • A plain-language verdict every second: working, quiet, loud or clipping
  • Input picker, plus the sample rate, channels and settings the browser applied
  • Echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain switches to compare raw and processed sound
  • Estimated background noise floor taken from the quiet moments between words
  • Record up to 30 seconds, play it back and download it in the browser's own audio format
  • Clear explanations when permission is blocked, no microphone is found or another app is using it

How to use the Mic Test

  1. Press Start microphone test and allow microphone access when your browser asks
  2. Speak at a normal volume and watch the meter, waveform and verdict
  3. Pick another input, or switch echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain, if the sound is wrong
  4. Press Record, say a sentence, then play it back to hear what others will hear
  5. Press Stop to release the microphone when you are done

Example

Input

Speak a sentence at normal volume, about a hand's width from the microphone

Output

Peak −12 dBFS · average −26 dBFS · 48 kHz · Mono
Working — speech peaks around −12 dBFS, a healthy level.

Speech that peaks between about −24 and −3 dBFS has enough level without distorting.

Common errors & troubleshooting

  • The browser never asks for permission. — An earlier Block is remembered for the site. Click the lock or camera icon in the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, then reload and press Start. On an http page the browser refuses microphone access outright, so open the https address.
  • The meter stays flat and the verdict reports no sound. — Check that the microphone is not muted by a hardware switch, a mute key or a system input volume at zero, and that the right input is chosen in the list. A headset can appear as two inputs, so try the other one.
  • The microphone works here but not in Zoom, Teams or Meet. — Call apps keep their own input choice and permission. Select the same microphone inside the app and allow it in your system's privacy settings, and close any other app that is holding the device.
  • The level is very low although the microphone works. — Raise the input volume in your system sound settings, move closer, or try Auto gain and compare. Peaks around −24 dBFS or lower are on the quiet side for speech.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell my microphone works with the Mic Test?
Speak and watch the level meter and waveform move. When the verdict reads Working and your peaks sit between about −24 and −3 dBFS, the microphone is picking you up properly. Record a few seconds and play them back if you also want to judge the quality by ear.
What do the dBFS numbers in the Mic Test mean?
dBFS is decibels relative to full scale, the loudest signal a digital microphone can carry, which is 0. Everything real is negative: speech peaks around −24 to −6 dBFS and a quiet room sits far lower. The closer to 0, the louder, and touching 0 means clipping and distortion.
Why is my browser asking for microphone permission in the Mic Test?
Browsers never let a page listen without your say-so, and the prompt is the browser's own control. The audio is processed in the tab only for the meter, waveform and spectrum. Choosing Block simply stops the test, and you can change the decision later from the address bar.
Why does my microphone work in the Mic Test but not in Zoom or Meet?
Video-call apps choose their own input and need their own permission. Select the same microphone inside the app and check your system's privacy settings. If the test shows a healthy level, the hardware is fine and the app's setting is the likely culprit.
Does the recording from the Mic Test stay on my device?
Yes. A recording exists only if you press Record, lasts at most 30 seconds and is kept in memory in this tab. You can play it, download it or delete it, closing the page discards it, and nothing is uploaded.
What is the difference between echo cancellation and noise suppression in the Mic Test?
Echo cancellation removes your speakers' sound from what the microphone hears, which prevents echo on calls. Noise suppression reduces steady background sounds such as fans, and auto gain adjusts the volume. Switch each off to hear the raw microphone and see how much each one changes.
