Webcam Test Online
See your camera's live picture, its real resolution and frame rate, and a quick brightness check, then save a snapshot — all in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
The camera picture is shown and measured in this tab only. Nothing is uploaded, snapshots go straight to your own downloads, and stopping releases the camera.
The Webcam Test opens your camera and tells you what it really delivers. Beside the live preview it shows the actual resolution the camera returned, named in familiar terms such as HD 720p or Full HD 1080p, with the aspect ratio and whether it matches the size you asked for. The frame rate is measured from the frames you see and shown next to the rate the camera reports, so a camera that has slowed to 15 fps in dim light is easy to spot. A brightness check samples the picture once a second and warns when it is dark or the lens looks covered. You can switch cameras, mirror the preview, save a PNG snapshot and copy a plain-text report for a support ticket. The picture stays in your browser and is released when you press Stop.

Common errors & troubleshooting
The preview is black. — Look for a closed privacy shutter or a camera-off key, make sure the right camera is selected, and close other apps that may be using it. The brightness card says so when it sees only black.
The browser says the camera is in use. — Another app or tab is holding the camera. Quit video-call apps and any other tab that uses it, then press Start again. A system privacy switch on some laptops has the same effect.
The resolution is lower than the box promised. — Many cameras reach their top size only on a fast USB port, or only at a lower frame rate. Request the size from the list: if the card says Below request, the camera or its driver does not offer that mode.
The frame rate reads far below 30. — Cameras drop to 15 fps or less in dim light to gather more light, and a busy computer can also stall frames. Add light, close heavy apps and watch the measured value recover.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my camera black in the Webcam Test?
A black picture usually means a closed privacy shutter, a camera-off key, the wrong camera selected, or another app holding the camera. The brightness card calls out an all-black picture. Cover and uncover the lens: if the reading changes, the camera works and only the scene was dark.
What does camera in use by another app mean in the Webcam Test?
Most operating systems let only one app read a camera at a time. If a call app, a recorder or another tab already has it, the browser refuses with a not-readable error. Close the other app or tab, then press Start camera test again.
How do I see the real resolution and frame rate of my webcam in the Webcam Test?
Start the test and read the Resolution and Frame rate cards. The resolution is what the camera actually returned, not what the box says, and the frame rate is timed from the frames on screen. Request a size from the list to compare what each mode delivers.
Does the picture from the Webcam Test leave my device?
No. The video is drawn in your browser tab and analysed there for size, speed and brightness. A snapshot is only saved when you press Take snapshot, and it goes to your own downloads. Stopping the test releases the camera and clears the preview.
Why does the Webcam Test show 720p when my camera box says 1080p?
Boxes quote the maximum, but the mode you get depends on the request, the USB connection and the light. Request 1920 × 1080 explicitly; if the card still reads HD 720p and Below request, the camera or its driver is the limit. Some cameras offer 1080p only at a lower frame rate.
Is the Webcam Test snapshot mirrored like the preview?
The preview is mirrored by default so it behaves like a bathroom mirror, but snapshots are saved the way other people see you, not mirrored. Switch on Save snapshot mirrored if you want the saved picture to match the preview, which also reverses any text in the frame.
