Reaction Time Test
Click the moment the panel turns green, five rounds in a row, and see your average, median, best and worst time in milliseconds, measured on your device.
Timing happens in this tab and nothing is uploaded. Your last 10 runs and personal bests are stored only in this browser, and you can clear them at any time.
The Reaction Time Test measures how quickly you respond to a signal. The panel starts blue; click to begin and it turns red, then after a random wait of one and a half to five seconds it turns green, and you click as fast as you can. Your time is the gap between the colour change being drawn on screen and your press, taken from the browser's own event timestamps rather than a tick counter. Clicking early throws the round away and replays it. Five valid rounds give an average, median, best, worst and spread, a rating, a rough comparison with typical results and your personal best. Sound mode swaps the colour for a beep so you can compare hearing with sight. It all runs in this tab, and only your last 10 runs are saved, in this browser.
Features
Five rounds with a random 1.5 to 5 second wait, so you cannot learn the rhythm
Timed from the press event's own timestamp against the moment the colour change was drawn
False starts are caught: an early click discards the round and replays it
Average, median, best, worst and spread for every run
A rating from Exceptional to Slow, framed around the typical 250 ms
Sound mode: react to a beep instead of a colour, with a volume control and a sound check
Click, tap, Space or Enter all work, and a personal best average is kept for each signal type
Your last 10 runs are saved in this browser, and a one-line summary copies in one click
How to use the Reaction Time Test
Click the blue panel to start a run of five rounds
Wait while it is red; clicking now counts as too soon and replays the round
Click, tap or press Space the instant it turns green
Click to continue after each result, then read your summary after round five and try again
Example
Input
5 rounds, colour signal
211 ms · 228 ms · 241 ms · 249 ms · 286 ms
Output
Average 243 ms · best 211 · worst 286 · 5 rounds
Rating: Average (typical adults land around 250 ms)
The median of those five is 241 ms, and the spread (standard deviation) is about 28 ms.
Common errors & troubleshooting
I keep getting Too soon even when I wait. — Any press while the panel is red counts, including a stray second click from the previous round. Presses are ignored for a third of a second after each result; watch for the green rather than counting a rhythm.
My times jump around from run to run. — Reaction time normally varies by 20 to 40 ms between runs. Judge yourself by the average of several runs rather than one round, and rest your hand between runs.
No sound plays in sound mode. — Browsers start audio only after a click, so press Test the sound once and check your volume and output device. Bluetooth headphones add 100 ms or more of delay, so use wired ones for fair results.
The panel never turned green after I switched tabs. — A round that is waiting when the tab goes to the background is cancelled, because browsers pause drawing for hidden tabs. Return to the tab and click the panel to carry on.
Frequently asked questions
What is a normal reaction time on the Reaction Time Test?
Typical adults land around 250 ms on a visual test. Under 180 ms is rare, 180 to 230 is fast, 230 to 290 is average, 290 to 350 is a little slow and above 350 is slow. Tiredness, age, practice and your hardware all move the number.
Why am I slower on a laptop trackpad than with a mouse?
A trackpad often needs a deliberate press, and some wait to see whether a tap is the first half of a double tap. A mouse button, or the Space bar, usually registers earlier. Compare results only on the same input device.
What counts as clicking too early on the reaction time test?
Any press while the panel is still red, or before the beep in sound mode, and any press stamped earlier than the moment the signal appeared. The round is thrown away and replayed, and the false start is counted so you can see it.
How many rounds does the reaction time test use?
Five valid rounds per run. A false start does not use up a round, and you can begin another run straight away. The average of five is steadier than a single click, though it still varies from run to run.
Is audio or visual reaction time faster on this test?
People usually respond a little faster to a sound than to a light, often by tens of milliseconds, because hearing is processed more quickly. Speakers, Bluetooth delay and output latency add time, so sound results depend even more on your equipment.
Do monitors with a higher refresh rate help on a reaction speed test online?
Slightly. A faster display shows the change sooner after the browser draws it, which trims a few milliseconds, and a low-latency mouse helps too. The effect is small next to your own variation, so use the same screen when you compare scores.
